Ari (arisxbooks) | 45 comments For me, it was Breakfast at Tiffany's, the book was really good but more of a short story & there was a lot less character development, whereas the movie is one of my favourite films of all time.

Anyone else? ♡

Jeff (gentlemanjeff) | 10 comments Great topic! Thought about putting this in Overrated Titles but this category fits much better. Princess Bride! I think people conflate the screenplay with the novel, which is nowhere near as nuanced and developed. For one thing, like many people, I really didn't enjoy the cutesy intro, but Goldman wrote both, so it's just a matter of preference.
The Princess Bride by William Goldman

✨Vi✨ (thebookbitxh) The Perfect Date ( the movie was so good, I loved it ) it was based on Stevie Blooms novel The Stand-In and ngl the novel was very boring i dropped it midway.

Mark Kennedy (kingsharkus) | 5 comments Knock a the Cabin was a decent movie but way better than the book (Cabin at the End of the World by Paul Tremblay)

Also I liked the Magicians trilogy by Lev Grossman but the TV adaptation was just so much more magical.

I also go back and forth on whether I enjoyed The Expanse book series or tv show more, so that's up in the air for me personally.

message 5: by Marti (new)

Marti The lord of the rings, I'm sorry, the first book was so boring :(

message 6: by Bhaktayyyy (new)

Bhaktayyyy 2 states!!!! It's written by Chetan Bhagat, an Indian Author. Although I don't like his books... But this book is adapted into an awesome movie.

message 7: by ✨Vi✨ (new)

✨Vi✨ (thebookbitxh) ^^, 2 States movie was ✨✨✨, but the book was meh

message 8: by Jo (new)

Jo (jo961) | 5 comments Women Talking by Miriam Toews. I love the book itself but the film absolutely brought it to life for me. One of my favourite films.

I agree with Knock at the Cabin. The book made me furious.

Vlada (vlada_t) | 10 comments The Shawshank Redemption

message 15: by Kristy (new)

Kristy Buehler For me it was The Exorcist. I wasn't alive when the book or movie came out and I saw the movie way before I read it. But when I finished reading, I felt like it was a waste of time.

message 16: by Jeff (new)

Jeff (gentlemanjeff) | 10 comments The classic example is Benchley's Jaws. Thoroughly mediocre book.

message 17: by TimeFliesAway (new)

TimeFliesAway | 121 comments The hunger games, i think? But maybe only bc i barely remember the books. Though it was a good decision that they made 2 movies for the last book.

Heartstopper, too, i think. While I'm not happy about how much more dramatic the tv show is, I do love the new characters they added, especially Imogen.

I agree. The movie has a lot more to offer.
Same with Pasternak's "Dr. Zhivago", great adaptation by David Lean, but what a boring novel!

message 19: by Percy (new)

Percy The Angel (percydiangelo) | 24 comments the mortal instruments (shadowhunters) i didn't find the books as interesting as the tv series

message 20: by Hally (new)

Hally | 23 comments Divergent (but only the first one) i just love theo james so much

message 21: by KYLE (new)

KYLE MILLER | 5 comments To Have and Have Not was a great film adapted from Hemingway's worst novel. Forrest Gump was a much better film than novel. And Normal People was an outstanding limited series adapted from a pretty good novel.

message 22: by Morgan (new)

Morgan Rose | 89 comments The Handmaid’s Tale. I know it’s a series but I read the book after seeing all the seasons and I really didn’t care for it and I’m glad I saw the show otherwise I think I would’ve been confused when it would flash back and forth.

message 23: by keedy (new)

keedy ✿ (keedylovesdilfs) | 25 comments tsitp. the books are so lame and the characters are WAYYY more immature. i'd day djats is quite solid, not better but it gave the side characters their own background stories instead of just living for the mcs which is something that i love about the show more.

message 24: by Em (new)

Em | 78 comments I know it's not out yet, but the movie adaptation of A Ballard of Songbirds and Snakes looks way better than the book from just the trailers

message 25: by Christine (new)

Christine Mathieu | 948 comments "The Bourne Identity" was disappointing whereas the version with Richard Chamberlain is excellent and very suspenseful. The book has no suspense.

Heartstopper by Joy Fielding was filmed?

Paul (Stephen King's version) | 23 comments jaws it wouldn't even get published in this day and age

message 28: by Christine (new)

Christine Mathieu | 948 comments The mini TV series "22.11.63" (Stephen King) with James Franco was a lot better than King's novel (the middle part was too long).

message 29: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (officerripley) | 281 comments World War Z.

༝༚꒰ঌLaura໒꒱༝༚ (highfaerie) I think the only movie I ever enjoyed more than the book was Tomorrow When the War Began, I don't think they ever adapted any of the sequels but I would have watched the heck out of them xD

message 31: by Sini (last edited Oct 24, 2023 04:34AM) (new)

Sini I think that "Death in Venice" by Visconti was even better than "Death in Venice" by Thomas Mann. And maybe "Satanstango" (Bela Tarr) is just as brilliant as "Satanstango" (Laszlo Krasznahorkai).

message 32: by Júlia (new)

Júlia (apondofbooks) Bad Omens - Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. I love both(!), but I think the series capture more of the characters essence.

message 33: by Jon (new)

Jon Newman | 4 comments Three Stephen King adaptations:
Stanley Kubrick's The Shining
David Cronenberg's The Dead Zone
John Carpenter's Christine

message 34: by Maya (new)

Maya | 23 comments The show Shadowhunters was way better than The Mortal Instruments. It still had it's problems, but it cut a lot of the weird stuff and I actually for once liked the main characters, so that was great.

message 35: by Phoenix (new)

Phoenix Wright | 4 comments for me it would have to be Mockingjay (#3 Huger Games book) and The Lord of the Rings. As a fan of the LOTR movies, I decided to get the books and was so bored by the first one, I could not even finish it.

Rebecca is book-hooked | 3 comments I also have to go with Jaws. The movie is phenomenal! The book focuses too much on the relationships of the characters and lacks the suspense that the movie perfects.

A lesser known one is Words on Bathroom Walls. The book is good, but the movie is great. The visual effects in the movie really add to the story.

message 37: by Priscilla (new)

Priscilla Black | 46 comments Lord Of The Rings. Sorry but the books don't get interesting till halfway through the series.

message 38: by camira (new)

camira honestly the harry potter films were better than the books in my opinions

message 39: by Rosalyn (new)

Rosalyn Leigh (batistebespeaks) | 2 comments Vampire Diaries television series far surpasses the book series

sky ~miss.littlereader~ (mslittlereader) | 0 comments This is a good topic.
I honestly thought that, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘰𝘳𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘛𝘳𝘪𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺 is way better than books especially the first book it's kinda boring but I like 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘦𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘒𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘰𝘰𝘬3.
Who read the 𝘚𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘢𝘮𝘣? I think the movie is was great (one of my favourite movie of all time.) than the book or maybe because I can't remember the book anymore (I think I should read it again😁)
I also love 𝘗𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘋𝘪𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 movie rather than the books, don't hate me please, yes the book is good okay, I rated it like 3stars but this is one of those rare instances where the movie is so much better than the book.

Christine Mathieu | 948 comments KYLE wrote: "To Have and Have Not was a great film adapted from Hemingway's worst novel. Forrest Gump was a much better film than novel. And Normal People was an outstanding limited series adapted from a pretty..."

Out of the four movies that Bogart & Bacall made, I thought "To Have and Have Not" was the worst and pretty boring (so I never read Hemingway's novel).
I really love "Dark Passage" which was based on a mediocre crime novel, but the movie is one of my all-time favorite film noir movies. Even better than "The Big Sleep" or "Key Largo".

message 42: by Mikayla (new)

Mikayla Holst | 6 comments I don't think it was necessarily an adaptation that was better, but I adored both the movie and the book A Simple Favor. They both had totally different endings that both were logical to the progression of the storyline. That was one of my favorite adaptations as well as the book itself!

message 43: by Deborah (new)

Deborah Botts I couldn't get very far into Shoeless Joe, but Field of Dreams is my favorite movie

☠︎︎ A.K. ☠︎︎ (literarygoblin) Elizabeth wrote: "Lord Of The Rings. Sorry but the books don't get interesting till halfway through the series."

Agreed! I grew up loving the LOTR movies, but the books reeeally weren't for me

☠︎︎ A.K. ☠︎︎ (literarygoblin) I love the Practical Magic series as a whole, but the first book doesn't even come close to how perfect the film adaptation was.

message 46: by Nadine (new)

Nadine | 5 comments Fried Green Tomatoes, The Shawshank Redemption, and Bridgerton come immediately to mind.

message 47: by Cari (new)

Cari Legere (carithewriter) Maybe The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The movie brought Narnia to life in a way the book couldn't. I'm talking about the Disney one, not the BBC one
