I read the book in the early 00's. The only real non-spoilery thing I remember is that the magic in the world is based on mathematical equations.


Spoilers below! There is some sexual content as well as some sexual assault in the book.




(view spoiler)[ I remember the beginning of the book the girls get drunk and one of them performs acts on the other that causes her to lose her virginity. Shortly after they're both sucked into a fantasy world and separated. One girl becomes attracted to females and the other is sexually assaulted and turns into a courtesan. I think her face is on the cover with a butterfly painted on it.

I remember that one of the ways powerful people pay for things is with "spells" that are long complex equations and that sometimes they leave a part of the equation out as a way to ensure they get whatever they're paying for.

At some point the girls reunite but I can't remember how. The main antagonist is super powerful because he comes from their world or a similar one and somehow kept either a calculator or laptop. (hide spoiler)]
