The Sutcliffe Diamonds by Janet Quin-Harkin, perhaps? I think it's adult rather than YA but the author did also write a lot of YA romances, so you might have picked it up thinking it was another of those.

How about Sweet Valley High: The Wakefield Saga by Francine Pascal? Definitely has the 5 generations and the San Francisco Earthquake. (Can't link because I'm on the app, sorry.)

Good suggestion, Julie! I just checked my Sweet Valley Saga books and it looks like The Wakefield Legacy: The Untold Story is the one that has both the San Francisco earthquake and the Hindenburg. It starts in England in 1866 rather than in Australia, though.
