I read this book as a teen back in the 90s. I believe it is set in a utopian future where a man commits some crime that he is punished for. Punishment includes living the life of someone from the past. I think it may be set in WW II. I remember a violin or piano being involved, and there is also a love story in it and has a tragic ending. Thank you!
