You should have put a playlist in all the books! Did you have one for each book? It is never too late. :) Add one to each book and upload. :)

Graeme Rodaughan | 1263 comments Interesting material, J, especially the last two.

I'm not a hvy metal fan, just never took to it, but I can see and appreciate the applicability of the first song.

The next two are deeply atmospheric, well done, and I think you'll find threads of applicability within the story.

It's one of the things with a written story, there's no background music or musical theme, and frankly ... sometimes the story just begs to be accompanied by music.

I can't imagine the intellectual property tangles of doing that, or how to do it, short of an 'audible,' version of each book.

But, that's a budget well beyond my humble means.

It will be landing in the U.S. tomorrow all over our locations as well! lol :) It must be an interesting life living in the future! I am reminded of the almanac from Back to the Future - how nice that would be for now. :)

message 11: by Graeme (new) - added it

Graeme Rodaughan | 1263 comments Of course, it's entirely up to the reader to read this book however they wish too, but if you're slammed for time, and looking for breaks, I'd recommend the following blocks...

Chapter 1 followed by a break before chapter 2, or chapter 1 & 2 together.

Chapters 3 & 4 together.

Chapter 5.

Chapters 6 through 9 are quite episodic and can be read with breaks at the end of each chapter.

Chapter 10 can be read as a setup for the finale.

Chapters 11+ read in a single hit through to the end.

Enjoy.

Michael J. (michaeljclarke) | 93 comments I thought this might be a good time for me to check out Graeme's writing by joining the buddy read. Then I realized this is Book #7 in the series and I would probably be completely lost and bewildered.
So, I ordered the Metaframe Omnibus (Books 1-3) and I'll start there. Maybe I'll peek at the former Buddy Reads for the books in this series as I go.
I'm still going to follow this thread to see the comments, but I'll avoid the spoilers. Cheers!

Graeme Rodaughan | 1263 comments Hi Michael, welcome to the series.

You are correct about reading the books out of order. The books are tightly sequenced blocks of story with each book often starting within hours of the end of the previous book. Reading them out of order would definitely be confusing for the reader.

Feel free to ask me any questions about the stories as you go on the other threads, and I'll answer them there.

As for spoilers on this thread: "Set Spoilers to Stun!"

J. Gowin | 2580 comments Plowing into it.

Chloe is definitely worse than Crane. Part of me hopes that she starts hearing his laughter as it all comes apart.

I take it that in this universe W. W. Jacobs never wrote The Monkey's Paw.

The Odysseus is racing home. I doubt her homecoming will entail archery and axe heads. But I do expect a bunch of corpses.

I was reminded of an exchange in which it was pointed out that I'm the kind of storyteller who keeps piling pain upon my protagonists until they rise above it in the climax. I agreed with an offhand statement to the effect that heroes are aspirational goals and as such I thought of Odysseus as a surrogate father. I wonder, will Anton be Odysseus or Frodo?

Graeme Rodaughan | 1263 comments Hi J.

Re: "Chloe is definitely worse than Crane. Part of me hopes that she starts hearing his laughter as it all comes apart."

Ahh... the whole "is this a dagger I see before me?" pathway as she cracks up from all the guilt...

Re: Anton ... more like Frodo.

Regarding the last. I figure mass-energy must be conserved. The simplest solution would be a cascade of worlds, each world translating sideways a single universe, to fill the original hole created by departure - hence for any given world in the cascade, the difference would be minute, but for the travelling world - substantial.

The kid can't catch a break. I imagine him writing that first college essay, "My Worst Summer EVER!" Just wait until the TA gets to the paragraph on how every woman in his life is just a friend, dead, or a blood sucking fiend.

For some reason Goodreads is having a conniption over trying to add a link to a comment beneath a quote. This lecture is a good primer on Marcus Aurelius.

J. Gowin | 2580 comments Chapters 7 & 8 reminded me of The Stand and The Road.

Chloe has no sense of the disjoint between her ideals and the reality she inflicts. Every time she bemoans how evil Crane had been in his control of her I chuckle. Please let him be her psychotic psychopomp.

I suspect that Lamb's name will soon become literal and Li is lost.

J. Gowin | 2580 comments After I noted how Chloe's ring reverie reminded me of Frodo' partial quote, I find Anton thinking, "... here at the end of all things." Does an AI orb equal a palantír?

J. Gowin | 2580 comments I just finished. I have quotes from Shakespeare and Dickinson merging in my mind "Parting is such sweet sorrow...", "[It] is all we know of Heaven and all we need of Hell."

I'll ruminate on it, and post a review tomorrow.

The sword which was broken was reforged.
