Ok somebody reccomened this book to me and I was wonderin is this too mushy gushy or not?

It's not mushy gushy at all. It's about a girl who is raised as an assassin, how is that mushy?
Hmm..Graceling is not mushy. There is some romance in it but not enough I think to scare a guy away. I would say go for it and read the book. I think a guy could read it even if it is from the point of view of a girl. It does not feel like it is throughout the book though! So, yea go ahead and try it. I like it!
Graceling has a central female character but the plot is more suspence and action than anything else. Let me ask you this....have you watched Tomb Raider or Underworld? If you have, did you enjoy those movies? If yes, then you will like this book.
I don't think a guy would be interested in Graceling. It's quite heavy on romance.
My 12 year old son read it and really liked it.
I think romance definitely plays a part in the book, but its balanced by some really great action. And to be honest, the action wins out as both more exciting and convincing.
I think this could cross gender lines really well, actually. The main character is a girl, true, but she's not a girly-girl, and Po, the male lead, has a large part.
I agree with T, though this book has action and deals with sense of self more than romance, I doubt that a guy would really and truly enjoy this book the same way the female population does.
My husband read it and really liked it. He just read Fire and didn't enjoy it as much, said it was geared more toward females.
Yep I would... sure it's a little on the girly side but I'm pretty sure a guy would still like it =) Besides, at some points I believe that Katsa could've passed as a guy with the way she was thinking/acting... =P
I too was struggling with this question - maybe because of the cover and the fact that most readers on this site are female so almost all the reviews seem to be from females. I'm reading it and I like it - Married, 40, two daughters. It's not a 'girly book'; it's got good action, pace, fighting, some romantic tension, etc. Would a girl like it more than a guy, maybe, who the heck knows; depends on the guy. All I know is it isn't a mushy love story with some action like I'm sure Twilight is - I recommend it.
BTW: The Hunger Games also had a lead character that was a strong girl, with some romantic situations, but I wouldn't necessarily call that a 'book for girls' either.
My saving 'grace' - no pun intended - in deciding to read this is because I think my daughters may one day want to read it and I like to preview the books when possible - and where the content seems palatable to a guy; which this clearly is.

I don't think that a guy would like to read this book, becaue it's so romantic,and that romance is from the girls perspective. It does have a lot of action and a main guy character, but it just strikes me as a book that is geared towards girl.
Updating my previous post - I am a little over half way thru and it is getting a bit 'romantic' - I'm going to finish it as I'm guessing it gets less mush and more action packed in the 2nd half.
Not really DD. There isn't a lot of action in Graceling. The main battle is an internal battle (Kasta's). There is a brief fight scene, but it hardly makes up the book.

Nope. Uglies is futuristic, but there isn't a great deal of action in that series and the narrator is female. My most recommended reads for guys in the YA genre are...Looking For Alaska

Thanks Heather. I think I'm going to start a thread for guys on here to help other guys and get more input. I did read the Hunger Games Series and Loved It - now in a constant search for something that measures up.
Given that bit of information you would certainly like Gone and Hunger. They are both alternate reality, kind of like Stephen King meets Hunger Games, I reviewed them both if you want to take a look.
I'm going to make my husband read it - I think he'll like it. As far as female-leads in books go, this one reaches out more than any I've read.
Well look at it this way, The Hunger Games The Hunger Games has Romance in it but tons of guys still read it so.....
