Classic/Period Novel, side plot about wife's lover being walled up in a cupboard by the husband when she refuses to admit infidelity

Pretty sure this was based in England, and that the walling-in of the lover was a side-plot to a larger novel. I recall listening to it as an audio drama, possibly through BBCSounds, but am unabke to figure out what it could be! I remember feeling horrified knowing the lover died behind the wall though!

Didn't Charles Dickens wall off his wife in their own house? I believe she had access to food, water, etc., but this allowed him to pretend that she did not exist and have an affair with the actress? Maybe from a biography?
