DESCRIPTION FOR BOOK SERIES
The Odyssey to “Who are you – survey into our existence” is a quest with many stages. The search for “Who are you” is about you and me and all that is in connection with us. Nothing is on beforehand excluded. Are you and I connected or are we separated? What makes you the person you are? Who were you before your birth and who will you be after your death? The answer to these questions is currently unknown, but nevertheless we raise these questions.
I wrote the book that I would have liked to learn from
– A. Zee en Steve Weinberg
The first part of this contemporary Odyssey includes our oneness and separation and also our connectedness in mutual trust.
The second part of this quest deals with five common realities.
Section 2.1 is an exploration of “Facts and logic” during a holiday week in Florence, where the three main characters consider the transition from Medieval Scholastic to Renaissance. At the same time they explore the limits of “facts and logic”, the boundaries of science, life and death, the hereafter, God, and the possibility of God in the form of a man, the mind of the warrior and the foreshadows of the Reformation. This report of this section is available via another webpage under “Books” on the website of Omnia – Amsterdam Publisher.
Section 2.2 is an exploration of “Intensities and association” in Amsterdam, where Carla Drift, Man Leben and Narrator consider the Reformation and the consequences thereof in Holland. During this part of the survey they look into iconoclasm, a personal relationship with God, Calvinistic predestination, fear for freedom, capitalism, to have or to be, the end of time, “My life closed twice before it’s close” by Emily Dickinson and “One what is that”.
Section 2.3 is an exploration of “Emptiness” during a four-day sailing trip with the tidal flow on the Wadden Sea, where Carla Drift, Man Leben and Narrator first survey “emptiness” in the form of “empty from” and “empty to”, then consider “emptiness” as “being whole” (or “ursprünglichen Ganz Heit” in “Being and Time” by Martin Heidegger) and thereafter perceive “emptiness” as uniqueness – in unity and unicity – of everyday life superimposed within “being whole” as answer to the question “One, what is that?”. This exploration of “emptiness” provides an introduction and commentary on the Buddhist Heart Sūtra.
Part 2.4 is an exploration of “Change”. Carla Drift and Man Leben share – at the campfire under the starry sky during the trek through Kenya – what they know about the origin of our universe until the end of time (and back?). Carla gives a surprising answer to the question: “Can we go back in time?”. Her answer is: “Yes, but in another way than we think.” In two thought experiments, Carla takes fellow travelers Ferdinand, Peter and Man Leben on a journey with a photon, and she leads them into the interior of a black hole. Then she explains that in principle spacetime and energy shape one another; ever-increasing small (quantum mechanical) fluctuations create an ordered irregularity wherefrom we emerge in our human shape. Towards the end of the trek, Man Leben falls asleep peacefully to wake up dead the next morning.
