message 67: by Lucilla (new)

Lucilla | 144 comments I read Towing Jehovah by James K. Morrow for this prompt. This book was *so weird*. The premise is that God's 2-mile long dead body needs to be towed to the Arctic so it can be buried in an iceberg, which, yes, weird. But it's so much weirder than just that. I gave it 3 stars - even though I don't think I actually liked it - because the writing was truly excellent. No matter how frustrating the plot or characters were, I was always thoroughly drawn in and engaged in reading.

message 79: by Shonna (new)

Shonna Froebel | 255 comments I read Polly Fulton by John P. Marquand, a novel that was written in 1947. It was mentioned in The Trouble with You by Ellen Feldman, a book I read earlier this year as one of the main character's favourite books. The Trouble with You is set in the 1950s, and I was intrigued enough to track down the book and read. it.

Renee Hoile | 88 comments Would "Missing: A Private Novel" by James Patterson & Kathryn Fox qualify? Craig gets emotional involved with a client who comes to Private help search for her missing father. He makes decisions in the search in order to protect the missing man's daughter. Meanwhile, in another case of a stolen child, Craig may have led the killer to the murdered victim's door because of a poor decision Craig made putting the reputation of Private at risk. Any comments?? Thank you. If this book does not fit here, any suggestions?

message 89: by Verix (new)

Verix Silvercrow (verix_silvercrow) | 22 comments My first book of the year was Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, by Robert M. Pirsig; it's a very introspective book by the nature of all philosophical reads. On a motorcycle trip from the Midwest down to California with his son, the speaker gives a chautauqua to the reader about his considered idea of Quality - what it is, and how to understand it. The story is constantly shadowed by the ghost of a man named Phaedrus who is intimately familiar to the speaker, and much of the physical story (rather than the philosophical teachings) involves the speaker's mental turmoil, as well as that of his son.
