22-year-old Olivia has been missing for one day…and counting. She was last seen on CCTV, entering a dead-end alley. And not coming back out again.
Julia, the detective heading up the search for Olivia, thinks she knows what to expect. A desperate family, a ticking clock, and long hours away from her husband and daughter. But she has no idea just how close to home this case is going to get.
Because the criminal at the heart of the disappearance has something she never expected. His weapon isn’t a gun, or a knife: it’s a secret. Her worst one. And her family's safety depends on one thing: Julia must NOT find out what happened to Olivia - and must frame somebody else for her murder.
If you find her, you will lose everything. What would you do?
This clever and endlessly surprising thriller is laced with a smart look at family and motherhood, and cements Gillian McAllister as a major talent in the world of suspense and a master of creating ethical dilemmas that show just how murky the distinction between right and wrong can be.
(view spoiler)[ so I'm liking this one okay so far I hate that we have a cop that covered something up. Ugh, it just sits wrong but I understand she did it for her daughter
but her daughter doesn't seem to be handling it well
I wonder if she will end up forgiving her husband. It seems like they still have a spark. that she might be able to forgive him
I don't have a guess yet on who was in her car and made her plant that stuff. Interesting that this same guy was someone interviewed for the previous disappearance.
I still think she should look at the roommates more, at least right now. Why did she tell them to come to her? If she'd only been there a day, day and a half? Feels like there is something more there (hide spoiler)]
Wow (view spoiler)[ so I didn't see that coming. Lewis was Sadie's dad and he made Olivia up - or at least THIS version of her. so wild! I think it's odd that a simple search of her didn't bring up the additional background on the REAL one though... surely it would have brought up TWO addresses and information.
and what is up with the bitcoin? did the kid really do it? I mean, we DO know that she swore he was home but he definitely tried to meet with Olivia. . .
what on earth can Julia do? She's so tangled in this, she's now done so many dishonest and shady things. (hide spoiler)]
wow (view spoiler)[ so I still think it's a huge plot hole that her partner Jonathan, who's supposed to be an amazing analyst, missed that there were two Olivias...
but holy crap. who would have grabbed her? was it the son? he's definitely not with the mom right now. could it be. . .jonathan? or someone else close to her? hmmmmmm I don't think it's Lewis. maaaybe Price? (hide spoiler)]
I feel (view spoiler)[ so much better about that loophole. I'm not sure why she didn't catch it. Why she didn't question Jonathan too. but she was pretty distracted saving her own buns. I like that Price ultimately helped her. I sad the corruption went up to Patricia too. Yuck. Glad Lewis got to scare her, even if she wasn't held accountable for what she did
