Ashleysdreamlibrary (ashleysimpson1211) YA book read in high-school library between 1990-2000. The description was along the lines of a young girl pays the price for her misdeeds in a way that reconnects her to nature and reminds her where we all came from. But when you actually read the book she gets cursed and is turned into a bear. Eventually she has little bear babies and somehow breaks her curse. When she breaks her curse she is 18 again.

Ky | 449 comments Is this Native American themed in some way? I ask because this kind of reminds me of the tale of a chief's daughter who offended the bears by complaining about their smell and was forced to be a bear's wife and bear him some cubs.

Ashleysdreamlibrary (ashleysimpson1211) it sounds like it might be! do you remember the name so I could look and see?

Ky | 449 comments Sure. The folk tale I'm thinking of is a Haida tribal story about a young noblewoman named Rhpisunt who went walking and began to complain about the bears. It might also be a Tlingit folk tale; it seems like a popular story among the Pacific Northwest tribes. Try "Bear Mother" as a search term.

I hope this can help you home in on the YA book you're searching for.

Ashleysdreamlibrary (ashleysimpson1211) no luck yet
