YA book read in high-school library between 1990-2000. The description was along the lines of a young girl pays the price for her misdeeds in a way that reconnects her to nature and reminds her where we all came from. But when you actually read the book she gets cursed and is turned into a bear. Eventually she has little bear babies and somehow breaks her curse. When she breaks her curse she is 18 again.

Is this Native American themed in some way? I ask because this kind of reminds me of the tale of a chief's daughter who offended the bears by complaining about their smell and was forced to be a bear's wife and bear him some cubs.
