I'm a librarian looking for a book for a patron. Here's the description I've received:

It's an adult fantasy from 2002 or newer. It's written in an interview format. It's about a boy whose parents are minstrels. They are traveling together in a wagon. The minstrels fall off the wagon and die. The boy gets accepted to a university where they teach magic.
