YA Science Fiction? Boy finds a computer with a human brain in abandoned or never used place. Read around 1992-1995? Spoiler.

Plot: one boy gets hit by a train. The other boy is the MC and goes through the whole story dealing with this computer with a human brain he found in some abandoned or otherwise never used place. I think he finds out that the brain is his friend’s who had supposedly gotten hit by the train at the end of the story.

I have been looking for this book for years! I read it when i was 12-15 years of age but i feel like the published date is probably much earlier than those years. I only remember (and it’s a hazy memory, at that) what i put in the “plot” area of this comment. Though, i have an odd thought that the cover (of, likely, the mass market paperback format) might have been red. Any insights are highly appreciated! Thank you.

What were the boy(s) doing when one got hit by a train? Does the book start with this scene?
