Laura Rayndrop (laura_rayndrop) | 14 comments Hello everybody,

I am new to Booktok but like Booktube so I'll probably fall in love with the platform too:)

I had a question for all who are Booktokers or in general enjoy reading: What makes you interested in picking up an indie book? What can an indie author do to catch your interest? Do you find it impolite or annoying when indie authors contact you regarding their books?

For context, I've just published my first novel (fantasy mystery with queer romance) and have tried posting about it on Booktok but as I don't really know much about the platform and don't feel comfortable showing my face, it hasn't gotten much traction. Any suggestions on what I can do better?

Thank you so much and have a great weekend, wherever you are!

mahno_or.a | 12 comments Okay honestly when a book has a nice cover I'm automatically attracted to it, so I'd read more about it. Usually, if anyone asks for a review of their book, I give it, but if I don't really like the plot or the blurb I skim through the first few chapters.
And about when authors message advertising their book, it's really not that annoying because a) it's not something that happens every minute and b) I understand that the book has to get started SOMEWHERE.
Just share your social on Goodread groups or even the details of your book and it should pick up.
My aunt is an author and that's her advice anyway... just spread the word but not in a way that's monotonous or a way that you've already done before because it becomes something we automatically learn to ignore..
Also, I think there a few platforms online that publicize indie books for free in return for the pdf, I'm not really sure about how it works but you can check it out :)

Robert Drews | 98 comments Hi Anne. Indie authors and those with boutique publishers have a more challenging time getting their work known to the public since the big names tend to dominate the industry, but that doesn't mean we can't try and succeed. I have been promoting my book and website on facebook, instagram, and goodreads and gotten my book into a couple of local bookstores and submitted stories to local newspapers. All work, and I would recommend you pursue the same. It took work to write your book, and now it will take work to let readers know it exists, Cheers, good luck, and God bless.
