Review:
Okay, so I actually like this series but the main characters of this one I didn't like as much as some of the others. I think the main reason was it was harder to really get into touch with the characters. One character that I liked the most was actually the deceased Grandmother. She was so sneaky, leaving little things after her death. I also really like the dogs Cookies and Creams. Those dogs run the roost and I'm not sure how Jenn managed them. They love to dig holes! Jenn was a little annoying at the start but also her parents were a touch extra so she came by it honestly. Miles was strong and had a take charge attitude from the beginning. I loved the banter back and forth between the characters.

Review:
Better Than The First
The first book was all rain and storms, snakes, sharks and the tropics of Midwatch I loved it. This one is heat, horses, camels, an oasis, burning and The Red Desert. I loved it. The imagery Danielle L Jensen uses is just so vivid.
Traitor Queen manages to be of the rare sort - levels up. The pacing, the characters, the machinations of the inner sanctum of the Maridrian castle, the Red Desert, Valcotta and so much more. Themes of blame, accountability, redemption, forgiveness and grudges are handled so well I felt the internal struggle of the characters as they dealt with these things.
Quotes Keris has the majority of gems in the first part of the book

● obnoxious Veliant shit (Aren on Keris)

This was a pretty fast read for me. I just had to wait until the new month rolled over to read it. I liked the chemistry between Becca and Tucker. Becca thinking she was just meeting a rodeo cowboy and finding out more added to the story. It had just enough heat and steam to keep it a going but also not too much where you are missing the storyline. I also really liked the side characters and saw Jace has his own book that I'll probably read soon.

This was kind of fun! I've not read much, if any, by Sarina Bowen but this was sweet and smexy at the same time. Couple of times I felt like the MCs contradicted themselves about what they wanted but maybe that's real life? The one thing that bothered me was a character who had just gotten out of prison for involuntary manslaughter - he crashed a car while high that killed someone. He went to prison for 3 years, then a stint in rehab before coming to work at the orchard to help him get back on his feet. What didn't ring true was that his characterization was that of someone who had just gotten clean... but I can't imagine he didn't detox during prison. So while going to rehab after prison was probably smart in order to give him the skills to fight his addition, I just didn't like the way they kept referring to his sobriety like it was brand new. This was a minor thing to bother me, but he has his own book later so we'll see how it plays out. Overall a fun read and I'm glad to keep going in the series.

Review:
A thin line between Cute and Cringe
The wedding bees walks this sliver of a line and falls on either side often and usually on the same page. Something will start of cute in one paragraph and veer off the rails into cringe by the end of the second paragraph and somehow find itself in cute territory by the next page. It gave me whiplash.
Theo Fitzgerald: No matter how often I had to remind myself that he is Scottish - I just kept hearing southern. That's on me though but also the way he spoke gave me nought Scottish vibes. Not even British across the pond vibes.
Sugar Wallace is likeable and in a weird way she is naïve at times and bold at others. I did like that she wasn't not some cookie-cutter Mary-Sue but I felt like she needed to pick a lane and maybe stick to it?
Ruby Portman started out likeable, moved into disappointing but relatable and then veered into eew rude and then back into likeable. I guess this book is about the human condition? People are multi-faceted and can occupy both annoying and likeable space at the same time?
Yeah whatever to that. I just wanted to like this book and feel the warm and fuzzies. I did not want to ring up Scottish teacher-friends and ask them if Theo Fitzgerald is a common name and I did ot wantbto google summers in Scotland because the "not a lot" sounded suspiciously unresearched. I also did not want to play "weird way to describe an accent but okay". Still when it's all said and done, I didn't hate it. It made me think of Practical Magic and the Good Witch and although it's no Sarah Addison Waverely Sisters kind of magic realism it does have that little glow about it.
Favorite concept: well who knew bees could be familiars? They're always stinging my dogs and my dogs are always trying to eat them so I mean as good as cats no?

I probably would have given this 5 stars if not for the overall melancholy feel of the female main character. She is grieving for a family member, so I understand that she IS melancholy but it bleeds into all aspects of the story. Again, that is probably justified but as she begins to turn the corner to understand herself better, her wants and needs as well as her growing feelings for Iwan, I never get a true sense of joy and happiness and I was still feeling sad after the HEA ending. Still, a very well written story with complex characters and storyline. I will try this author again.

Review:
I really liked this book. Finn is a firefighter and Rory is a lawyer that is going to work with the fire house sometimes. Finn immediately is attracted to Rory but she keeps putting up barriers. Flash, the station's puppy/dog, really stole the show. One of my favorite parts of the book was Finn coming home to find Flash had a little attack with his couch. It was pretty funny. I didn't like Rory's dad and he could've been nicer. Overall, it was a really good book and I would read more in this series if there were more books.

I was checking everyone's posts and noticed that all the books comply with the task but if you could go back to your selection posts and add in HOW we know it, that would help Jane. You just need to note it is set in "ABC place" as noted on the main page/in the precis/in the title/series title, etc. Thanks!
Happy Friday and Call Day!

Sometimes I think I might like contemporary chick-lit but honestly it is not for me. Still, I am trying to expand my CR shelve. I started out a mild dislike for both main characters. On a positive, I do want to book a week long vacation to the island of Maui and decide for myself if Simmer down is an accurate representation of all things tropical.
Plot/Storyline/Themes.
Nikki's inner monologue felt more like a YA train of thought as opposed to the 29 year old FMC and strangled pacing. I found myself losing interest more than once but it's Maui and I wanted that near travel show experience of the island.
Characters: Nikki was a little unbearable at times. Callum won me other by chapter 6. But I refuse to picture him in that splice abomination of Zac Efron with Michael Fassbender - like c'mon. Just no.
Loved the side characters: Tiva, Penelope, Finn even pretentious manbun Matteo Roderick.
Favorite/Curious/Unique Scene::
London town! I loved the change in scenery and pace, a trip over the pond was exactly the boost this book needed.
Favorite/Curious/Unique Quotes:
●Life doesn’t always care what you have planned. Sometimes it pulls the rug out from under you (Nikki on moving to Maui).

Review:
What a cute book! I read it in breaks all day and ended the last few chapters wandering out into the backyard, then out to the park with my dogs as they went on a sniffing, squirrel-hunting mission and I stood in place holding my Paperwhite and giggled like a fifteen year old. I love writing letters. Do people still write letters?
I recently read a futuristic pen pal love story in the middle of a Time War kerfuffle: How To Lose A Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone and that opened a whole new delight for me. This book just added to my interest in the "archaic" form of communication.
Romance Plot/Storyline/Themes: Pacing Perfection. The opening chapter was such a hook and yanked me out of my world and into my first Regency Romance. I love it all; the manners, the aires and all that fancy socialite bull. I mean the post scripts alone were just adorable!
Characters: Aunt Ernestine and Aunt Mildred were my favorite supporting characters.
Lu: Every strike against her in regency romance would be the reason why Fae Kings would fall head over heels for her. Let's see: Sallow skin with freckles, Jet Black hair. Check, She wears khakis and caps and is a norm breaker. Check. She's Cottagecore: isolated, bibliophile, who wants a cottage and chickens. Check.
Favorite/Curious/Ludicrous/Unique Quotes:
“Fiddlesticks. “Can a person have some tea in this house? Preferably something unlaced with laudanum or other tonics. (Aunt Ernestina after a glorious tirade )

It's been awhile since I've picked up one of Kleypas's books and I forgot how much I liked her. I love the Hathaway siblings. I've always wondered what it would be like to have lived during those times and it's fun to see how the balls, titles, people all interact with one another. I did have to go look up more about the gypsy culture because I was curious. There's also an interesting ferret, Dodger, that brings laughter to the story. I probably need to remember to read more in this series but they are also good to keep for challenges like this. It was a fast read and I really enjoyed Win and Kev.

Tessa Bailey is one of my favorite authors, I just about love anything she writes. This one didn't change that feeling. I loved that both characters had major flaws that they recognized in themselves and while seemingly to accept those flaws, were still hurting from them and really avoiding how to get beyond them rather than true acceptance. Of course, what they hated about themselves is what drew them to each other and the story is a sweet (though the smexy scenes were NOT 😉) showing of how they pushed themselves to be better for the other.
