"Down on his luck and kicked in the pants one too many times, Pagan Kidrouk arrives on the doorstep of the Templar Knights in medieval Jerusalem, looking for work as a squire. Expecting only a respite from life on the street and a few square meals, the sarcastic sixteen-year-old finds himself hard at work for Lord Roland de Bram — a not-so-exciting life of polishing Lord Roland's armor, laundering his garments, and even training to fight by his side. But as the Infidel Saladin leads his army to Jerusalem, it becomes more and more difficult for Pagan and Lord Roland to decide what action to take or whom to trust. Is a bloody battle for control of the Holy City inevitable?"

I forgot about the Pagan Chronicles! I read Pagan's Crusade AGES ago, but I never finished the series (not because I didn't like it, but because I just didn't get to it). Catherine Jinks' Genius Trilogy was my favorite trilogy as a kid, and I've read it several times, but I haven't thought about Pagan's Crusade in a long time. Thank you so much for reminding me of it! I definitely need to read that!

I'm looking for suggestions for books with a medieval setting (I use that term loosely; it doesn't have to be historically based, just medieval-inspired) with a protagonist who is a servant of some kind. That could be cooking/serving food, cleaning chambers, running errands, maybe a stable hand - just anything classified in the book as a servant (or indentured servitude or slavery, just anything where the protagonist is performing servant duties). I'm primarily looking for Middle Grade or Young Adult books, and any genre is fine so long as it hits the pre-established criteria (fantasy, romance, supernatural, etc. - I'll even take sci-fi if the character travels back in time or whatever). I lean more towards reading about male protagonists, but I'll accept any gender. Thank you VERY much in advance!
(I confess, BBC's Merlin may have a little something to do with this request.)
