A Game of Thrones
question
Read or Pass?

So, I've been debating whether i should read this series or not.I've seen it at Walmart multiple times but am hesitant to pick it up.I dont want to start this long of a series and end up not liking it, yethaving the rest of the series just sitting there waiting to be read.I'm intrigued, yet I'm hesitant. Should I or should I not read this series?

Don't buy the set. Borrow the first book from the library. You'll either like it or you won't; you won't know until you start reading.
It doesn't really change pace, so you'll know if you like it or not by the time you're about 1/3 through the first book. Then you can decide if it's worth buying the set.

I'll definetly give them a try, since I LOVE fantasy and at times enjoy lengthy books if the plot and premise is interesting.

I would go for it, the first book should be enough to get you interested in the series, however. If that will not work, I would not bother reading through the rest of them hoping it gets better as I think the Clash of Kings is a little bit weaker than Game of Thrones, so things might get worse for you before they get better (Storm of Swords).
Read it. You'll be hooked. Borrow Book 1 from a library or a friend if you're hesitant, but I feel sure you'll love it. I was hesitant too, but I dove in and loved it.

I believe you should read it. Like Ben said, it's not quite the 'adventure' style, but more politics, war, and intrigue. It's more realistic than anything else. If you like thrills and drama, GoT is for you!
Ben: Yes you're right that it's not your typical fantasy series, I'm just not sure whether or not I should make such a grand commitment to it
Shawn: Hmm..I agree that his last book is taking forever to come out..Hmm maybe I will watch the TV show first and see if it's worth reading..as for Sanderson I'm DYING to read his mistborn triology but sadly right now I don't have the money. Why couldn't he just give me the trilogy for free haha
Don't read it. It is hyped WAY beyond the quality of the writing.. and he is going to die before he finishes it.. so it won't even be worth reading since you will never know the ending; unless you watch the show -- they have already said that the show will reveal the ending FAR before the last book is out.
With all that said.. book 1-3 are decent bordering on good. Books 4 and 5 drag the series into the shit and make you want to demand your money back from Martin. Oh.. and book 6? He has already been working on it for 5+ years and has said there isn't a chance of it coming out this year. He is too busy going to cons to write.
People act like he is this great fantasy writer.. because he kills off everyone or mutilates/maims them, or kills them and resurrects them in screwed up ways. And by book 5 you honestly are just sticking around because you feel like you have to. Oh.. and it is Fantasy Lite at best.. so if you love fantasy.. don't go into expecting that. It will really disappoint you. It is more historical fiction/gore-porn than anything else.
With that said.. if you have some time to kill and have read all the really amazing authors that are invested in actually writing.. It is probably better than reading the Scarlet Letter... but only if you have read it before... otherwise.. that is a better story too. :)
Read anything by Brandon Sanderson and you will be far happier. He is a better writer, and he pumps out like 4+ books a year. He is a machine.
Or.. check out Jordan and the Wheel of Time series. He died, but had Sanderson finish it.. so at least it is a complete story.
I am sure a bunch of people will be like 'OMG how can you say that?!'... but they are drinking the cool aid. It is not as good as people want to tell you it is. But especially with the show... people have turned crazy over it.

This is my favorite fantasy series written (or in the process of being written as the case may be). Just don't expect a break-neck pace. Plot points are introduced very gradually and there is a lot of political intrigue involved.
So I'd say buy it, but be aware that it's not quite the 'adventure' style of fantasy.

I think there are elements of almost every genre in this book, so you'll probably like it. I strongly recommend!
It depends on your taste. I personally despise soap-operas and a good ninety percent of modern tv dramas. This book (at least the first one; I never got past the halfway mark of the first one) reads very much like a soap-opera, with the fantasy element taking a backseat to the soap-opera element (again, this is only what I know of the first book).
A lot of folks like this sort of thing, and it's part of the reason why it transitions so well to television. I personally didn't care for it, but I say read the first book just so that you know you tried, and if you end up enjoying it, then you have the whole rest of the book series to look forward to.

If you're a fantasy addict, there's no question. If you like medieval fantasy, same answer. It's quite challenging only in the framework of how many houses there are and the connections in marriage and children between them. I've read the first book perhaps 4 times, the rest of the series twice. The fifth book is a marked drop off for me, personally, but the series isn't finished. Give the first a try; if the twist near the end doesn't hook you, nothing will.
Hmmm..well I usually read the book before I start watching the accompanying series or movie, so I would do the same with this. Yes, they are pretty lengthy books but the length does not deter me. I would just read a short 200 page book between them so it doesn't become a chore. The reason that I plan on buying the series is because my local library is at least a 30-40 min drive from where I'm at at the moment, and you can't beat the Walmart price at 25 something for all the books in the series. If it wasn't for that, I WOULD check it out of my library
Read it. I felt the same way as you before I went ahead and read it. I actually watched a couple of episodes of the series before deciding to pick up the book. I loved it so much, I devoured that brick in less that a week.
It's a great series, but you have to go in knowing that the shortest book is like 600 pages. So you may want to take a break into between books, otherwise it can start to feel like a job reading them. (Or at least that was what it was like when I tried to do it.)
