Thank you.
I look forward to yours.

Posted mine. Took a 6 hour C++ example on interval maps today. Failed because I didn't realize that a std::map::operator[] requires use of the default constructor. Dang.

I haven't a clue what any of that means, but you have my sympathies.

Interesting story, BTW. I imagine either an astronaut or an architect would find it intriguing.

Justin Sewall | 1244 comments Hi friends,

I may not get a story in this month. My father passed away unexpectedly last Wednesday, so I'm flying out to Chicago tomorrow for his funeral. I wrote his obituary and now I get to give the eulogy. I did get a chance to visit him in June over the Father's Day weekend with my youngest brother, and it was a good visit, so I'm glad I at least had that.

Jot, happy for your impending nuptials!

Talk to you all later!

And that sucks!

My sincere condolences, Justin. I'm glad you had some time with him at the end. I'm sure he was very proud of you.

So sorry, Justin. May your words help others to embrace the man he was.

message 15: by Paula (new)

Paula | 1088 comments My condolences to you, Justin. Glad that at least you and he were able to have that last visit in June. May he be long remembered.

message 16: by Kalifer (new)

Kalifer Deil | 359 comments Good to be back! I've got to get back in the saddle and ensure my story formatting comes out on GoodReads as I intended. It looks good in Office but squeezed on Goodreads.

message 17: by Kalifer (new)

Kalifer Deil | 359 comments Hey, Jot! I took a UC extension course in C++ years ago, got an A+, and have no idea what you are talking about. Don't feel bad. All it takes is one tiny misconception, and everything falls apart. That's why I love Julia (the language). When Julia isn't available, I just use plain old C. I've used well over twenty computer languages, from Fortran to Lisp, and all too often, there is no option but to use the language the 'team' is using.

message 18: by Kalifer (new)

Kalifer Deil | 359 comments Justin, I am sorry to hear about your father. Mine died in Mexico over 50 years ago. He was not in my life for any time, so I felt nothing. On the other hand, my mother lived 102 years old. In a way, she didn't die; she just faded away. There was no shock. My older brother died abruptly at the age I am now, 87; that was a shock. Although he lived most of his life in Bolivia, I had good relations with him. At my age, I've seen many family and friends die. Unfortunately, that's a sad part of life.

Welcome back Kalifer. My mom is 88 and keeping busy. Hoping she can live to 100. Awesome job raising 5 kids on a limited budget, as we never felt like to wanted for anything. And because of that, all five of us live within 10 miles of each other. Going to play golf with my brothers in a couple hours. Should be fun, though I suck at golf.

As for the C++ technicality, I used the std::map operator[] overload which makes use of T's default constructor, which I was not provided access to. Asfinktasezwat

And as for goodreads formating, I alway just place an extra line after each paragraph.

Yep, exactly what I do.

Got mine in. A reprise of an old story but a different focus. Long live the Swarm.

message 24: by Jeremy (new)

Jeremy Lichtman | 410 comments Wrote a treatment, but didn't have time to turn into a full story this month.

message 42: by Kalifer (new)

Kalifer Deil | 359 comments Just for the record, I am happy about the three-way tie. That my vote went into the internet graveyard is fortuitous.

message 43: by Jot (new)

Jot Russell | 1709 comments Mod
Understood, and for the record, given that no vote was received before the deadline and publication of the outcome, I wouldn't be able to introduce it official.
