Story: Facilitating Between a Pumpkin and a Cat
WC: 318 words
For Halloween, I decided to paint a pumpkin to look like a penguin. Don’t ask me why. Do I know that penguins aren’t traditional Halloween animals? Yes. Do I care? No.
Truly, it was just an ordinary penguin pumpkin. But it had some extraordinary results with some of my family members.
See, I finished it on the 29th and I left the penguin on the kitchen table, as kind of the “centerpiece” of the dining room Halloween decorations. I put glittery spiders around it and little bowls filled with candy. It was quite pretty, I thought.
Unfortunately, only the human members of my family agreed with me.
I went to school the next morning, Friday, in costume. When I came home, the house was a wreck. My penguin was lying on his side in the middle of the table. The spiders were all over the floor. My tablecloth was wrinkled and bunched up in the corner.
In the middle of all this mess laid my cat, eyes wide, paws spread out, completely and totally terrified. I laughed, laughed so hard that my cat literally flew off the table. I didn’t see him for the rest of the night.
I carefully reset the table, hoping my kitty would get over his aversion to my cute penguin pumpkin.
But when I woke up the next morning, my penguin was once again askew, the spiders covering the floor in all their glittery brilliance, and a scared cat stuck in the middle.
It clearly wasn’t going to work out between the penguin and my kitty.
I tried everything. I put kitty treats around the penguin. I let the cat sniff the penguin when I was around. I literally sat there with my pumpkin and my cat and just watched as he flipped out.
Eventually, I gave up. And I made a pact with myself- next year, I’m not painting a penguin. ☺
