I wondered about that too. We might think African/ Indian/ Arabic names are "non-traditional" but they might be very well known in their own cultures. And names change over time. It is a big deal in Wives and Daughters that one girl has the foreign-sounding name of Cynthia, not common in 19th-century England, but nobody would think that in the US today.

I read a lot of Victorian mysteries, and they are full of unusual names, at least by today's standards

I upvoted this, but then I noticed that we already have a prompt for "A book related to night". Are they too similar?

That's for the voting to decide. I didn't vote for it because it's similar so others might feel the same way but I don't think the mods would have let it get into voting if it wasn't allowed.

I thought it was pretty obvious that the prompt was meant to denote names often seen in fantasy books, or nicknames not as a way for people to be jerks. Most any topic "could" offend someone if interpreted in a negative way. I'll ask for it to be removed from voting.

I voted for both. But then I like night

It makes me incredibly sick to think something hurtful would end up on the list because of me. I'd feel much better if it just disappeared. Now that it's been said, I can't NOT think about it.

Amy, I'm so sorry I made you feel bad about your prompt - I should have been more careful with my phrasing. I never intended to make you feel bad, only to explain why I personally felt a bit weird about the prompt. I know you didn't mean it like that.

Maybe if the wording was "an unusual name" as opposed to "non-traditional"? It looses some of the (accidental) judgy feel and would still incorporate your initial idea of fantasy names etc.

I also tried to have at least one DOWN vote, as I'm still figuring out the strategy of balancing up and down votes, but when I looked at the one or two I would have downvoted I found that I disliked them less than I liked others I wanted to upvote... So, 8 upvotes for me.
My favorite is Perceptions of Reality, which wasn't true at first. But once I started thinking of POV of someone with mental illness, or time warps, or amnesia-ish experiences, or the meta-verse, THEN it because really intriguing. Others will be fun to fill :)

Maybe this is a good reason for this prompt. If we're reading about someone with a name outside our own traditions, then we are more likely reading about experiences outside of our own as well. Which is a good thing, in my opinion. Just a thought.

If it gets voted in, the mods will do a good job with creating the thread. Some people who have common names like them while others wish they had a more unique name and the same applies to people with non-traditional names.

Agree! Not sure what books I would use for that, since Phish isn’t a band that suggests much to me."
A book about hippies? ;)"
I love a book about hippies.

1. A book with a character who could appear on the X-Files
I absolutely need this prompt to get in! I was a huge fan of the X-Files growing up and can still list all episodes of the first four seasons (which I watched and rewatched the most) by heart. Can't even begin to consider options on my TBR, but I have a bunch of FBI- or paranormal activity-related books alone.
2. A book that plays with perceptions of reality
Options on my TBR:
Blackout
Dark Matter
3. A book connected in some way to any of the flavors of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream — current or retired
I love the range of options this offers but don't have any immediate idea for it.
5. A book with more than one main character
I'll be using a book by Karen Rose
7. A book where a dream plays a role
Looking forward to finding something that fits.
11. A book connected to Anne of Green Gables
Looking forward to finding something that fits.
12. A book that has a character with a non-traditional name
Looking forward to finding something that fits.
14. A book related to a musical
I am a huge fan of musicals and have a sizeable collection, so I'll definitely be able to dig something up. The obvious choice would be
Das Phantom (Phantom)

I know the setup is different, and Jill, you may have also really wanted other prompts that seemed less destined to get in, so I understand your choice. I just hope you are correct :)

I like this idea. As a child of the 1960's, I really wanted to be a hippy and go to Woodstock, but for some strange reason, my parents wouldn't let me. I still hold a little affection for the style.
The 1960's and 1970's was an interesting era, and I wouldn't mind reading more about it. Of course, the movement (if you can call it that) didn't end there, but continued.

*People who live off the grid, off the land, in communes, religious cults
*Counterculture, anti-establishment, anti-government, anti big corporations.
*Peace rallies, anti-war demonstrations, civil-rights demonstrations. Later - Occupy Wall Street, 99 percenters, BLM, anti-violence rallies.

I'm sure the prompt was suggested in all good faith but personally it just reminds me of the discrimination that lots of people with "non-traditional names" face, whether that's because of classism or racism (there are lots of studies showing that CVs with "ethnic" names are rated lower than the identical CV with a name like Michael on it).
It's also very subjective, as what seems like a "traditional" name to me won't be the same to someone of a different age, nationality or cultural background. I know that most prompts are subjective and we all use out own interpretations, but with this particular prompt there's a lot of ways it could inadvertently cause offence. For example, if someone read a book with a main character called Aaliyah because it's not a name that they consider "traditional", that's gonna irritate a lot of Arabic speakers who know it to be a very old and venerated girls' name.
