Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Finally chased off the Overseers (apologies for delay, turf was not aligning until today!), and then spun 2 gremlins in a row. I think it says a lot that I seem to spin those blighters more than any other!

Triffid

1 200 to 299
2 Plot involves something that usually doesn't move, like a plant or castle
3 Three of something on cover
4 "decompose" in text
5 Blind or disabled MC or author

message 3952: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments How do we feel about "decomposing" rather than "decompose" in the text?

just finished one with "not wanting to skewer the decomposing body" on page 221 (so I don't have to look it up again if we decide to use it, lol)

message 3953: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I'm totally OK with -ing. 😊

message 3954: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Ok, have dropped it in, but can easily be removed again if Cat or Sophie wants to veto 😉

message 3955: by Melindam (last edited Sep 13, 2025 04:20AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I'm listening to my 600+ pager, and can only start on disabled author (MC) at the end of next week only.

Just in case you come across sth that may work. :)

message 3956: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments If we happen to spin one, I'll be squeezing a 500-pager in in a few days, as I'm ahead with my turf books for this round 😁

Cat (cat_uk) | 10122 comments Mod
I did a reshuffle of books, and finished off a set.

spun us

John Lynch (Australia)
1 200 to 299
2 Takes place in Australia
3 "axe" in text
4 Letters in WOMBAT in title
5 Tagged farm or farming at least 3 times

message 3958: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Naturally I have just read the last of the Aussie books in my tbr. Had about a dozen of them a few month ago.

Sod's law.

I am re-reading Lord of the Rings this week though, as I'm about to hit my turf cap and we still have a few days to go. So I have axe covered at least 😆

Melindam | 8375 comments 🤭

message 3960: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments How far are you with the Dan Jones Mel?

I've just finished a 500-pager that I can drop in there if you've still got a decent way to go (so we'll have plenty of chance to spin more 500+ 😆)

If you're nearly done, we'll leave yours where it is.

Also, is it any good?

message 3961: by Melindam (last edited Sep 17, 2025 12:26AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Please drop it in as I still need a few days to finish. :)

message 3962: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Okie dokie.

message 3963: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments And I spun:

H. H. Holmes (Chicago)

1 500 to 650
2 Takes place in a state on the Great Lakes (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin)
3 author first and last initial is the same
4 character goes to fair, amusement park, carnival, etc
5 MC moved/moves to a new city/town

so have moved your book to that slot! 😁

Melindam | 8375 comments 😅 thanks

Cat (cat_uk) | 10122 comments Mod
So, tasks looking for books are:

title contains the word "FIRE"
A cat is important to the plot
Takes place in Australia
Letters in WOMBAT in title
Takes place in a state on the Great Lakes (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin)
author first and last initial is the same
character goes to fair, amusement park, carnival, etc

I put this there for easy reference and a mental nudge to myself, though I don't currently have any planned that will fit...

I take it back! medium term (after the BOM) I'll have one for set in Illinois

message 3967: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I have no fire titles in my tbr, but who knows what will pop up on audible+ once the new turf tasks appear 😆

message 3968: by Melindam (last edited Sep 17, 2025 06:30AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I have a book with fire in title, but first I want to finish my 2 current chunky reads before committing to the next one.

Work is crazy this week and the peaking the next, so I'm much slower than anticipated.

message 3969: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Yay for pesky state task! I just finished one in New orleans for another challenge, so I expect to need one of those here in the next half-dozen monsters or so 😆

I had a James Baldwin (The Fire Next Time) but not feeling it right now. Though it's not unreasonable turf points (106 pages) so not ruling it out!

and possibly a cat one, going by the cover Infinite Archive (The Midsolar Murders, #3) by Mur Lafferty , but that'll be a week at the earliest, I'd think

generally feeling boo hiss about that Australia location too. :(

and sad that my current has an invisible M in the title (The Shadow Cabinet would be vastly improved if it smuggled an M in there somewhere, amirite?!)

message 3974: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments If I can make anything fit with the next turf tasks, I can always re-read one of my many Aussie books. just annoyed that I read so many of them recently and now that task shows up 😆

message 3975: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I seem to be having trouble with Bs instead of Ms.

just finished Witch Queens, Voodoo Spirits, and Hoodoo Saints: A Guide to Magical New Orleans, and not a B to be found. Rude.

message 3976: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Can make one of my Liane Moriarty books work for the next turf, so I'll re-read that for australia 😁

message 3977: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I have On the Road and Off the Record with Leonard Bernstein: My Years with the Exasperating Genius for WOMBAT.

But it can be kicked out, no hard feelings. :))

message 3978: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Yay!

I doubt there will be any kicking. that was a tricky one!

Oh, I also need something with all the letters in JUPITER in the title OR series title for another challenge, and am having some trouble. So if anyone knows of something that will fit, please holler!

message 3979: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Will check if I have anything to suggest. :)

message 3980: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Grazie!

message 3981: by Melindam (last edited Sep 18, 2025 06:52AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Actually, I found 2, but they are either a doorstopper or above 300 pages, not sure if they are any good for Turf Wars? Also they have all the letters with subtitles.

Do you still want me to list them?

message 3982: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments yes please! I can always see about squeezing them in somewhere if I'm ahead with my reading for the week (turf sadly has a cap now, so extra downtime is not out of the question)

message 3984: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Thank you! I'll have a looksee if I can locate any of them once I've finished updating my books.

message 3987: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Ohhh, lots!

thank you ladies!

I updated with more :)

apart from the ghost jaguar pirate treasure warrior (missing only the kitchen sink, I think!), I think they were all of merit, though some will be skewed by mood too :)

message 3989: by Sammy (last edited Sep 18, 2025 08:43AM) (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Ohhh, I actually have His Bloody Project: Documents Relating to the Case of Roderick Macrae. It didn't register as fitting because I have it listed without the subtitle on my SS! 😆

good turf count too.

I will use that one if I can't find any of these I haven't read yet on audible/library.

(I have the Scalzi too. No idea how the heck I missed that one!)

message 3990: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments None of the others immediately available, but have reserved a couple at the library because they look interesting!

The JS Bach might be a while though... they only have 1 copy and it is apparently about 2 years overdue right now! 😆

message 3991: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments 🤣

message 3992: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments The Bach book was the one that Kobo baited me with & sealed the deal. It was on sale for 1.99 usd and I fell for it. 😆

message 3993: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Thug Behram (India)

1 200 to 299
2 Takes place in India
3 plot involves "deceitful and organised robbery and/or murder"
4 set in 1700 or 1800s
5 numbers in 931 in publishing date and/or page number

message 3994: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I have a 319 pager coming up, so will grab that and see what else I have brewing...

message 3995: by Sammy (last edited Sep 20, 2025 08:44AM) (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I have the robbery/murder too, but nothing coming up for #4. closest I have is a dual timeline set in the 1600s and the 2000s 😂

Also, why couldn't we get the india task during the turf India round? Murphy and that darned law of his!

message 3996: by Melindam (last edited Sep 20, 2025 09:04AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments The Importance of Being Earnest can just get away with 1800s, so I can grab that. :)

There's a free audible original version that stars Stephen Fry as Lady Bracknell.

message 3997: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I think I listened to that one! 😁

message 3998: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I didn't know about it until now, and it is weirdly listed as a podcast, but I'm glad I stumbled onto it. 😊

message 3999: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Yes, audible have started doing a lot of them as podcasts. it's a little annoying, because it's so broken up, but at least they're there!

message 4000: by Melindam (last edited Sep 25, 2025 01:49AM) (new)
