so, I'm reading Katabasis, in which the MCs are grad students who can do magic. They don't describe themselves as sorcerors or anything apart from "people who can do magic"
Thoughts as to whether we can stuff it into the SORCEROR task?

It does works for "sacrifices something" - Alice sacrifices 30 yrs of her life in the hope of getting a recommendation, so I'm hoping for a twofer....

I'm not particularly picky when it comes to sorcerers, if they can do magic... they can be sorcerers. :)

If there is a female who does magic then I'm happy - given the task specifies sorceress rather than sorceror.

How is Katabasis? I was disappointed by Yellowface, but a return to some magic might be better.

I'm liking it. closer to Babel in that it's strongly about academic endeavours, but still with the MC you want to shake for being a bit of a blind drip

how did you like the Pratchett biog?
I liked it very much, but on reflection think it was probably completed too close to his death - I don't think Wilkins has fully got over everything, and the sections about the last years were a bit wonky. (too emotional? not enough facts, leading to missed opportunities? I'm not sure)

Melindam | 8375 comments For book set in China: are we OK with a book set in Hong Kong, even if it is just before the "handover"?

well, was technically only ever on load, so was always China....

I'm not going to get to a China anytime soon, so if you've got one, go for it :)

I liked it, but it got a bit more into his reaction to Terry's later years rather than a biography as such I think so felt more autobiographical. I didn't really get a sense of what Lyn and Rhianna were up to through a lot of it as it was very focused on his work - which might be an accurate reflection of his life.

I haven't got China or Korea any time soon so I'm happy for you to go for it Mel.

Yes - that's a great way of describing my issues with it. And very protective of Pratchett during his later years, understandable, but a definite shift from the earlier points

I have it on Kobo, still gathering courage and determination to read it.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments I'm waiting for a china task in turf... Could be any time between now and early december (if at all, lol), and there is a much smaller chance of korea being a thing, so they're all yours Mel ๐Ÿ˜†

message 3919: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments I still need to read the Pratchett. I think it might still be too soon for me also!

message 3920: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Sorry to admit that Korea does not feature on my book-interest lists, like... at all?
However, if you had something lighter and shortish to recommend, I'd consider it.

message 3921: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10123 comments Mod
actually, I might have a Korea / yellow text book to cover here & Turf when I'm done with Katabasis

message 3922: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments To be honest, most of the Korean fiction I've read has been pretty heavy in subject matter.

I did find To All the Boys I've Loved Before on the list (18x), which while not short-short, is a pretty fast and light read.

I do have a Korean horror on my TBr, but I very much doubt I'll get to it this month...

Yeah, my TT reading on Africa & Middle East had really heavy-weight books and for mental health reasons I really need a break from this kind of reading before taking it up again.

But we'll see if Cat or I get to Korea first.

Melindam | 8375 comments Anyways, finishing Kate Daniels 7 shortly and will get rid of the China task next for sure.

the rest not difficult though.

My reading has been absolutely trashed by one of my members of staff letting me know that she doesn't trust us to run the business and needs to seek legal advice before she'll be in a room with me again.

Will be reading in the background and putting things where they fit, but it's slow going right now.

message 3943: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Wow! Totally get that you're too distracted to read Sophie!
Hopefully you can get it all sorted out, ideally without escalation. Was there any hint this woman was unhappy, or did she just dump that on you?

message 3946: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5692 comments Mod
It started because we bought up the fact she wasn't doing her job well and that we were going to go through with a disciplinary process with her. Since then every week has bought a new piece of fun insanity from her. I've been working very hard not to shout at her while she makes a variety of increasing threats, but doesn't quit.

Getting advice this week about whether we have grounds to fire her because after 2 months of it, I've had enough.

message 3947: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Good grief!

Yeah, it's insanely difficult to fire anyone these days, especially if you're in the public sector. Unfortunately there are people who know this and play the system accordingly.

I really hope they can find a way for you, because that kind of toxic situation is no good for anyone.

message 3948: by Sophie, The other one (last edited Sep 09, 2025 11:05AM) (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5692 comments Mod
I'm hoping her signing a contract while she was under disciplinary investigation without talking to either of the partners about it and then being unable to tell us the contents of it will help that - especially since there was an another email advising us not to sign it very shortly after.

message 3949: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments That sounds like it could be something. fingers crossed for you!

message 3950: by Melindam (last edited Sep 09, 2025 11:43AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Ugh, sounds like a person thriving on toxicity, the absolute worst.

Fingers crossed you manage to get rid of her quickly. ๐Ÿคžโค๏ธ
