Rizzio by Denise Mina
Is that solid cover colour?
It's 118 pages

message 3802: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Very solid. :))

300 to 349
forest on cover
character is an archer
MPG Classics
character who is considered wise

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I'm planning on reading Twenty Years After this week, which will definitely cover 4 & 5, and maybe 3 will make an appearance?

message 3809: by Melindam (last edited Aug 03, 2025 07:21AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Cat,

If we move your Rizzio book for the page count of Anders Lindbeck OR Dale Pearson, we could finish one of them off.

For the solid colour cover, we could use my book Checkmate (The Lymond Chronicles, #6) by Dorothy Dunnett instead. For Leofric we still need a fantasy-of-manners, so that could wait with another lower page count book, whenever we can cover it.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments TURF starts on the 17th, and I'll be starting on the short books then! (so we'll only spin 600+ pagers from then 😂)

Definitely! TT will finish then we’ll get the chunksters.

The only fantasy of manners I can think of are the Austen books. Will see whether I can find an alternative.

message 3815: by Melindam (last edited Aug 03, 2025 08:31AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I have Jo Walton's dragon book which should be FoM (need to check - yes, it has 24 tags!), but I can only commit to it after TT is over.

message 3816: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments My The Witness for the Dead also has enough tags, and I'm happy to read either after 17 Aug. :))

message 3817: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments OK, moved Cat's book and will do a spin. 🙃

message 3818: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Soooo, obviously the book I've finished 2 days ago would have fitted page count and setting, but.... whatever... at least it's not a shortie.😅

Gilles de Rais (France)
1 651+
2 Takes place in France
3 MPG Children
4 1 and 4 in page count
5 published in October

message 3819: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Tainted Cup works for 1 & 4 in page count

message 3820: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5692 comments Mod
Roots: The Saga of an American Family works for the page count. I’ll get it done by the end of TT one way or another.

message 3821: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I have several chunky ones planned before the 17th, so can cover any large page counts that are otherwise unloved 😆

message 3822: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I also have a France book planned, but that one might not be until after TURF starts, as it has a reasonably nice turf page count 😆
(also TURF is restaurant themed this year, and I just can't help but think book titles with food or drink in them are going to come in handy!)

message 3823: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Unless...

Does Roots have a character you'd consider wise Sophie? If so, it could easily go where I have Twenty years After, as it's definitely a classic, and I can move Dumas down for the page count & france

message 3824: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5692 comments Mod
It has a couple of wise characters. The problem is that it’s depressing so I’m reading it v slowly.

message 3825: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Yeah, I bet!

Shall I move mine down? Or do you want to stick with the page count?

message 3826: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5692 comments Mod
I've just shifted yours. Have managed to get 15 mins away from the kids and Nana.

message 3827: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Oh bliss! Hope you enjoyed every second!

It’s amazing what a small length of time starts to feel v needed!

message 3829: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Definitely! It may have been a little while since my kids were little, but I still remember it well!

message 3830: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Mel, moving your finished shortie up to the swedish monster so we can spin! 😁

message 3831: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments First spin was Snek, so spun again. Another blimmin' short one! 😆

Sirens

1 100 to 175
2 takes place on a boat or ship
3 character is deaf
4 Rope on cover
5 "Mermaid" in text

message 3832: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Sammy wrote: "Mel, moving your finished shortie up to the swedish monster so we can spin! 😁"

I also removed it from the other 2 tasks. So those need covering as well.

message 3833: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments ACK! sorry, I obviously wasn't paying attention! 🫢

message 3834: by Melindam (new)

Just as an FYI, I'll be reading the latest Penric book, which is less than 150 pages, but not until after Towers (I'm in weird and wonderful countries mode now!)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5692 comments Mod
Centaurs done!

Now is it going to be another short one or is it sufficiently close to the end of TT to unlease a chunkster?

message 3839: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5692 comments Mod
Tomas and Tereza have come to spread their dubious take on love, but they are in favour of a short read.

100 to 175
MC owns a dog
character is a waitress
communism important to plot
takes place in the 1960s and/or 1970s

message 3840: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10122 comments Mod
As it's me, and as we are moving towards short for Turf Wars books, OF COURSE I spun

Leopold of Belgium (Belgium / Congo)
1 500 to 650
2 Takes place in an African country that Belgium once colonized (DR Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan)
3 tagged colonialism or imperialism 10x (combination accepted)
4 character works in construction or related job (carpentry, metal works etc)
5 MC travels to a different country

Sophie (drsophie) | 5692 comments Mod
I’m not planning to take part in Turf Wars so I’ll see what I’ve got unless someone has one on the go for the last week of TT.

🤣

message 3843: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I will also be able to cover longer books, though not right away, but after TT is finished.

message 3844: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I guess I could read King Leopold's Ghost to fit most/all?

message 3845: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments On the other hand, I need to remove my 8-in-publishing date book, if someone has a book that fits.

message 3846: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I'll still be reading 6-10 chunksters each month for Book Quest, but everything else for the rest of the year is gonna be 400 or less 😆

If we sell in the next couple of weeks, the timeline for completion would put us at December. So I'll start packing up my books in november, and they will probably stay that way until Feb/March . Due to differences in the way english and Scottish house sales work, it'll be better for us to sell this one before buying the next. luckily completion in Scotland is generally only 4 weeks, rather than the 4 months in England!
luckily we can stay with either my parents or with my aunt in the meantime.

We've been live 24 hours, and have 4 viewings booked in for Fri-sat so far. Here's hoping for a quick sale with a wee bidding war (hey, a girl can hope! lol)

message 3847: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments 🤞🤞🤞🤞😊

message 3848: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5692 comments Mod
Fingers crossed that interest in viewings turns into bids nicely for you. Glad that the Scottish system for completions is more sensible than the English one so that you can get somewhere reasonably smoothly in the new year.

message 3849: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Apparently scottish solicitors are more efficient than the english ones 😆

Running around like a loon getting everything ready for viewings tomorrow. easier said than done when the temps have been 30+ for several days now and any movement brings on much sweatiness 😂

message 3850: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I have moved my solid colour book to the "8" in publishing date task so that we can finish off Mutant Spiders.

New Monster incoming.
