OK, so quick summary of tasks needing books....

Takes place in Sri Lanka (my team has read 2 Sri Lanka books, so I won't be getting around to this anytime soon)

Tagged Fae (at least 10 times)

skull on cover
author initials WS or SW
MPG School

title contains the word "FIRE" - Mel :)
Tagged "assassin" 5 or more times - Cat
Black cover (>50%) - Cat

message 3752: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I'll take fire in title.

The rest is a bit uncertain as we are soon off to our summer travels and that will be the point where my reading becomes even more erratic than it currently is.
Will check on assassin tags.

I've found one that'll cover black cover & assassin task, which I can do next after my current book.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments All I can find in the Plus catalogue for Sri lanka is a 6 minute short story...

I'll grab it if there's nothing else, but I have no money to spend on books right now (seriously... I have less than £5 to my name!)

if we are OK with it sitting there for a while, I think have one in my kindle somewhere, but I'm prioritising hard countries for my team

or, Trouble in Nuala in on KU UK, with free audio via KU

message 3757: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I would, but I don't have KU!

Melindam | 8375 comments I'm perfectly fine with it sitting there for a while. :)

I can look at it once I get through My Friends

message 3760: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Scylla is gone. We have

DRAGON KING OF ARMS

1. 500 to 650
2. Text mentiones a heraldic beast (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Categor... )
3. a character gets poisoned
4. letters GOLEM in title
5. a family tree is included in the book

message 3761: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I'll wait in case you have books ongoing that may fit. If not, I have an upcoming book for page cover/heraldic beast.

message 3762: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I'm currently on one that would work for most of these, but it's audio only. The conversion tells me it would be 635 pages, but with NBRC usually relegating audio-only to 100 pages, I don't know if I can use it for such?

There was also a hunting scene which mentioned hounds (heraldic beast), but I'd have a very difficult time this far past it trying to figure out a quote or even which chapter it was!

Also works for poisoning and title.

There is a lot of waffle about family trees and lineages, but again, audio only means there isn't an actual one.

I'll finish within the next couple of hours.

message 3763: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I'd be happy for yoyr book to cover all the stuff. 😊

Well I finished the black assassin book and spun us

Dale Pearson (The Stupidest Angel)
1 100-150
2 "ikea" in text
3 ":" in title
4 tagged "fluff" (at least 10 times)
5 MC visits a place of worship (church, temple, synagogue etc).

message 3765: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I grabbed the last one with the book I just finished, will have a looksee for other stuff in a little while.

message 3766: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I'll be saving all of my under 200-pagers for TURF which is hopefully starting in about a month. after that, I'll be all over those tasks 😆

I'm grabbing the ":" task though.

message 3767: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Moving the book I had for the above task to the "fae" task, because it works and that's a more awkward task!

message 3768: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I'm an idiot. I literally just finished a book that can fill the task I just opened up again 😆

message 3769: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10123 comments Mod
yeah, but nooooooo! I don't like the ":A Novel"

but! never fear, it means I can put Challenger: A True Story of Heroism and Disaster on the Edge of Space in that task :)

message 3770: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments It was Essex Dogs A Novel by Dan Jones by the way.

A fiction book by Dan Jones Mel. Not bad, but I prefer his non-fiction. His characters were a little meh. given a bit more experience, he could become a pretty good HF writer though, I think.

At least he's got the historical accuracy thing going for him 😆

Thank you for the heads-up, Sammy. :))

When I've run out of his nonfic books I may try Essex Dogs, but I'm in no hurry about it. :))

Melindam | 8375 comments Grabbed fluff tag: with all the travelling, consistent reading is not on the cards.

message 3774: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Which would we consider harder? Tagged Fae or family tree in book. I'll soon be finishing mine and it actually has both!

message 3775: by Melindam (last edited Jul 17, 2025 08:04AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Hmmmm, family tree?

But I'd rather pick that one up than tagged fae. :D

message 3776: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Ditto...

I'll stick with the Fae, I think.

message 3777: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Yes, please! :)

message 3778: by Sammy (new)

message 3779: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I've got 1 & 2 😁

message 3780: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments And I got 4. :)

message 3781: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Spent a credit on a skull book (one I definitely wanted to read anyway!) And sent Hamlet packing.

Anders Lindbäck (Sweden)

2 Takes place in Northern Europe (Iceland, Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark)
3 MC does something for the first time
4 Plot involves financial concerns (your interpretation)
5 40 in page count

message 3782: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Anyone still reading the Backman BOM? If not, I was planning to pick up one of his after I'm done with my current print.

Can't get my hands on it beyond £££, so not currently.

message 3784: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Finished already. :( I think this was the last FB book for me, this almost pushed me over the edge into hating his writing. :(

message 3785: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Oh no! Have you read the Beartown books? I personally think those are his best work, though I've not read everything yet.

Melindam | 8375 comments Sammy wrote: "Oh no! Have you read the Beartown books? I personally think those are his best work, though I've not read everything yet."

Beartown (read book 1 only) already started pushing the limits for me, but this one pushed me so much further.

I understand that the world's an ugly place, everyone is nasty, a lecher, a paedophile, an abuser, a rapist, a killer, etc, but FB uses a cudgel now on all pages and hits you on the head with it in case you didn't get it on all previous ones.

In Ove & Brit-Marie he was more subtle about these issues, as far as I remember (need to reread them).

message 3787: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Yes, he does tend to go quite dark. It's an interesting combination with the whimsey he also displays...

If the new one is worse than beartown, I'll be sure to be in the right mood before I pick that one up!

message 3788: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I've just grabbed a book from the Plus catalogue that has several family trees inside (amazon look inside came through for once!), I'll get that one done tomorrow!

message 3789: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Oh thank you. I was really upset with looking through my history non-fic books and not finding a single family tree! What letdowns they are! 😅

I’ve just picked up something for Sri Lanka

message 3791: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Nice!

I think the "IKEA in text" is going to be the tough one now!

message 3792: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments If it comes to it I can re-read Horrorstör for it, but may be a week or two.

message 3793: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I found ikea, but won't be able to start on book before we are back home next week.

message 3794: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Awesome!

message 3795: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments finished off the family tree.

Mutant Spiders

1 100 to 175
2 Letters of WHITTAKER in title
3 "toxin" or "toxic" in text
4 MC visits a hotel or equivalent
5 8 in publishing date

message 3796: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I will be able to do loads of short ones, but not for a couple of weeks still 😢

message 3797: by Melindam (last edited Jul 23, 2025 08:24AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I think I'll be able to grab a short one. Better suited for travelling around. :)

The one I found also works for 8 in publishing date +hotel.

message 3798: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Leofric (Sorcerer to the Crown)
1 100-150
2 "Tagged ""fantasy-of-manners"" (2 or more times)"
3 There is an animal sidekick or familar
4 Solid color cover (>85%)
5 """serpentine"" in text"

message 3799: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Oof! It's definitely 'Buy one get six free' time on really short books... Still too early for me! 😆
