🤭

I see the sentiment and also the ratio behind a Northern Irish narrator, obvs, but yes to preferring less "abrasive" accents. 😊

We think this works for "headless person on cover"?
Masters of Death by Olivie Blake

message 3503: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Very headless!!🤭

well, but is it sufficiently a person ? ;P

message 3505: by Melindam (last edited May 03, 2025 09:24AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments For me, for monsters wheel yes. ;)

As we are less strict on rules here. If it were TT, I'd say no. :))

That's sufficiently a person for me too.

message 3507: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Definitely works!

My family arrived yesterday, so I've not been able to get online much. I'll be quiet for a couple of days, then hopefully business as usual 😉

Melindam | 8375 comments Purchasing the kindle edition for Say Nothing really helped. I kept switching between it and the audio and eventually grew accustomed to the accent. 😊

message 3510: by Melindam (last edited May 05, 2025 01:35AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments According to GR The Halloween Tree is set in Illinois. I have it in Audible Plus, so I can take that task.

Sammy,

I know you read that one. Is this correct?

message 3511: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Yes, I enjoyed it.

I know you're not a fan of horror, but not sure what your threshold is. I'd call this creepy, rather than scary.

message 3512: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments (It is a kids' book, so not even that creepy either, lol)

Melindam | 8375 comments Sammy wrote: "(It is a kids' book, so not even that creepy either, lol)"

I checked that it's a kid's book, that's the only reason why I'd even consider it, LOL.

You can be blamed for this one making it onto my TBR, just sayin'. 🤭

message 3514: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments lol!

Bradbury is a very atmospheric writer. but you should be ok. either way, it's a short one too! 😆

message 3515: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments And that's those pesky Gelth gone!

Snowmen (The Great Intelligence)

1 350 to 450
2 Letters of CLARA in title

4 Teeth visible on cover

Melindam | 8375 comments I got my Kobo today, a slightly delayed mother's day present. (In HU it's the first Sunday in May.)

Very excited with my new toy and downloading all the books I have purchased so far. 😊

message 3517: by Sammy (last edited May 10, 2025 04:05AM) (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Ok, here's an interesting one:

For character takes a boat ride...
I'm re-reading Anything You Can Imagine, which - being non-fiction - would normally not have characters, but it mentioned the fellowship (as a group and also individual characters) travelling by boat in 'Fellowship...'. so talks about characters in boats.

Use it for the task? Too twisty-turny headache inducing trying to make it fit? 😆

Melindam | 8375 comments I'm perfectly fine with twisty, if you all are. 😊

And thank you. Tower Teams will be a nice way of officially launching it.

And talking about TT, Sammy, your expertise is needed. 😊 I know you recommended a book set in Oman previously, but too lazy to look through the threads. Could you please repeat? 🥰

message 3520: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Celestial Bodies - Definitely worth a read! 😁

message 3521: by Sammy (last edited May 10, 2025 04:17AM) (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Adding the book to the task, but happy to remove if moddish individuals veto it 😉

(just, you know, do so in the next hour or so, because that's when I'll be finishing it 😆)

message 3522: by Melindam (last edited May 10, 2025 04:20AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Mods Almighty 😉

And thank you!! Consulting Kobo first. ;)

message 3523: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Went ahead and finished that one and spun a Discworld. would have done a world monster, but I'm assuming we're gonna be spinning lots of those during TT? 😉

Carcer

1 350-450
2 a psychopath or sociopath character
3 MPG Time Travel
4 features a character with a trait you find annoying
5 knife/dagger on the cover

message 3524: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments I need a time travel book for another challenge, so lemme go find something for that...

Melindam | 8375 comments Sammy wrote: "Went ahead and finished that one and spun a Discworld. would have done a world monster, but I'm assuming we're gonna be spinning lots of those during TT? 😉"

Correct. 😊

And no pressure, but I'm totally expecting one of us (myself included, obvs) to spin Leopold for DR Congo before!!! I finish my book the The Lumumba Plot: The Secret History of the CIA and a Cold War Assassination which I just bought at a 2-for-1 credit Audible sale and prompted by TT. 🤭

The page count would also be just right.

message 3526: by Melindam (last edited May 10, 2025 06:22AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I will start my historical fiction only after TT is officially on (I know it's non-fic month for you, Sammy), so if anyone finishes one before, then just kick mine out.

message 3527: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments I'll do my best! 😆

Yeah, the non-fiction is starting to get a bit much now, and I still have a few to go. I should finish Decline and fall... in a few days at least, so that will allow me to breathe a little easier (excellent read, but oh there is so very much of it! 😂).

Have around 3 other non-fiction to get done after that. But taking a short break to squeeze in a couple of other challenge tasks, including some St. Mary's because I need it!

message 3528: by Melindam (last edited May 10, 2025 06:25AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments The mind/ears/heart want what they want!

Unintentionally, but so far it seems May is also a non-fic month for me, at least in ratio. 😊

And while this TT will certainly push my boundaries, I'm trying to find mostly non-fic books for the hard country tasks if I can. 😊

message 3529: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments I am very fond of non-fiction, but I prefer my reading to be mixed up as much as possible. So the "genre of the month" part of that challenge is actually quite hard on me, especially as I've committed to the full year.

Almost all of my non-fiction this month has been history-based, so it's getting far too "samey" for my liking 😆

message 3530: by Melindam (last edited May 10, 2025 06:35AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Yes, it is refreshing to mix although I'm really satisfied with myself considering how little non-fic I used to read even just a few years back.

Age... maturity may have sth to do with it in my case I guess. 🥶 Also wonderful GR friends with their prompts and recs + maybe challenges? 🙄

message 3531: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Challenges responsible for book choices? As if that would be a thing! 🤣

I manage 1 non-fiction every couple of months at most so I'm v impressed with you managing a month of it.

MPG Timte Travel will be finished v soon small people allowing. Have been comfort re-listening to St Mary's.

Carcer now just needs a knife/dagger on the cover and it's done.

message 3537: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Paladin's Strength (The Saint of Steel, #2) by T. Kingfisher - probably more of a sword than a dagger?

I have sooooo many swords, lol.

Nah, it's a long dagger?😅

message 3539: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Chased them there headless horsepeoples off and went for a Greek spin:

Chimera

1 350 to 450
2 takes place in Asia Minor (Italy, Greece, Albania, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Egypt, Libya, Israel and Lebanon)
3 "spear" in text
4 MPG War
5 features a lion, goat, or snake

message 3540: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments 2nd task a good one for next week! (I have a Bulgarian one I'll be reading shortly if no-one has these lined up)

message 3541: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10123 comments Mod
I've got Egypt and Albania planned :) but both shortish, so if your Bulgaria covers the page count, have at it!

message 3542: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments nope, only 220 pages!

message 3543: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments you'll probably get to it before I do, so feel free to snag!

Yeah, I'm probably going to get the Egypt done first, for the Wheel (author born in Egypt oddly harder than you'd think!), then shift to tricky countries.
The Egypt book is a collection of short stories barely tipping 120 pages, so should be swift (absent me getting stuck on culture shock!)

ETA: In not-Tower and not-Monster related reading, I am really struggling to get into The Trees by Ali Shaw . don't know why, other than maybe the excitement of planning... Must absolutely get my head down and get it down before the end of the week!

message 3545: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Yep, that should be relatively quick, fingers crossed.

I have to read mine on my PC, so despite being a short book will take me a while.

Same here. I'm struggling with my present book a bit. It's not exactly outstanding, but there's nothing wrong with it per se. And yes, I got totally caught in my country plans. 😊

All non-fic and hard countries. 🤭

message 3547: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments DONE! It's taken me months, but I finally reached the end of The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire this evening!!

Typically, there's no chunky page count slot to put it in, but I grabbed the spear in text and lion tasks. surprisingly, for a book that is around 65% warfare, there's no MPG of such. Grrr...

message 3548: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳

Melindam | 8375 comments One of my intended TT books has War MPG, though finish date uncertain.

I'll put it there and wil see.
