Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I thought about that, but it would mean yet another device, and they're not cheap!

As I rarely read e-books anyway, it hasn't seemed all that necessary to go there for me yet.

I've been thinking the same and have set up a kobo account. It seems good for everything that isn't kindle unlimited. I haven't yet looked at their equivalent.

The Amazon linked product I'll have trouble quitting is this one - would miss you all too much.

I know what you mean about devices. Luckily for now my phone will suffice.

message 3454: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I can't read on my phone. Every time I try it gives me a headache! Something about the shiny screen, I'm guessing.

I suspect I'll be on GR until the lights go out... I've tried several alternatives, but none of them have the same usability when it comes to communities.

And I'm getting far too old to be changing my ways now 😆

And for me, quitting audible isn't an option until there is a comparable alternative out there, which may well never happen...

message 3455: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments For the time being, I have downloaded the kobo app on my tablet, that will tie me over nicely until hubby finds me a bargain new device.

Also, I will still be using my kindle as I've got loads of unread books and kindle books I intend to reread.

The other reason I'm keeping my account is b/c of audible. I'm not sure kobo has credit-option and generally the audiobooks are in the same price range.

message 3456: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I won't be quitting GR till there is the chance to connect with you all here. 🥰

Also, it's not 100% sure, but we may be travelling to London in June the w/e with Whit Sunday.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments it's all good, I'm currently reading another Sanderson! 😆

it also covers adventure, but unfortunately there's a glut of brothers, but nary a sister to be found so far!

message 3461: by Melindam (last edited Apr 22, 2025 12:26AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Grabbed the task author initials in worship.

Also just caught "hearth" in Bob 1, so claiming that one as well.

message 3462: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Could this get away with being "interior scene" or is it too vague?

Matilda by Roald Dahl

Cat (cat_uk) | 10122 comments Mod
That's interior :)

message 3464: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Great, because Domi's listening to it. I managed to find the HU audio version on audible and also discovered the sharing with kid option on the app. 😅

message 3465: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Currently my We Are Legion We Are Bob (Bobiverse, #1) by Dennis E. Taylor is assigned to lawful evil/hearth in text, but I can switch it to MC has sister and gold letters if you think it would be a better fit.

ETA: I'm doing it!

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments On another note... I'm missing a lot at the moment, with all the rushing around packing, painting and panicking, so if it looks like I've spaced on something, feel free to gimme a nudge! 😆

Melindam | 8375 comments Hack Attack How the truth caught up with Rupert Murdoch by Nick Davies

Can the handle of an old phone be considered a blunt weapon? 😆

message 3476: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments It can be used as a blunt weapon certainly, but it was't designed to be one. Depends on how we're interpreting this task 😆

message 3477: by Sammy (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Sammy,

I haven't stared this yet, but does Queer Heroes of Myth and Legend: A celebration of gay gods, sapphic saints, and queerness through the ages have any trickster characters?

I'm guessing there bound to be(?). :))

message 3482: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10122 comments Mod
I finished my long book yesterday, spun us a shortie:

The Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow

2 Headless person on cover
3 Set in New England: Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island.
4 Place name in title
5 MC visits a cemetary

I've got the graveyard covered :)

message 3483: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments For headless person.....

I have this cover where you can see Greg Wise's hand only, so in a way he is headless, but not ideal ... 😅

The Sense and Sensibility Screenplay and Diaries Bringing Jane Austen's Novel to Film by Emma Thompson

message 3486: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I'll be starting on The Plantagenets today.

Reading a lot of (mostly historical) non-fiction this month, so hoping the tasks play nice with that 😆

message 3487: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments also, We're gonna want a 650+ in about a week or 2, as I'm gonna be gutted if I finish Decline and Fall and can't find somewhere to put it 😂

message 3488: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments It JUST HAS to be put somewhere!! 🤭

message 3489: by Sammy (new)

message 3490: by Melindam (new)

yes, now that UNO is over, we are spinning shorties dammit 😅

message 3492: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I've been working on this thing since February!

Rather amusingly, I was emptying out a box of books from the attic earlier and found both a hardback copy of part 1 (1000 pages and about A3 size!!) and an abridged hardback copy of the whole thing (around 2000 pages, regular large hardback size).

I'm sticking with my full, unabridged Kindle copy, and saving myself having to move several kilos of book! 😂

Melindam | 8375 comments I find I may have to switch from the audiobook version to the kindle with Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland.

I forgot to check the narrator as I took it on full trust, but I find his Northern Irish (Ulster?) brogue super difficult to follow. Very surprised at and disappointed with myself, as I have no problem whatsoever with the Scottish accent or the Irish-Irish one, but for some reason I just cannot warm to this. 😥 I'm giving another chapter or 2 a try and then I'll just purchase the kindle version.

Cat (cat_uk) | 10122 comments Mod
Belfast accent is notoriously horrible, with no relation to the majority of Irish or Scottish accents. (Glaswegian Scottish an exception too)

message 3496: by Melindam (last edited May 02, 2025 07:02AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments It's not so much not understanding it, because it's understandable, if a bit harder to do so, but disliking it very much (which makes me feel bad!!!) :(

message 3497: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Yeah, that one can be quite tricky for people not familiar with it, as it has some unusual sharp vowel sounds that can really throw you.

Not a problem for me as I had a very good friend that sounded pretty much exactly like this guy back in the day. My personal achilles' heel is certain African accents. My brain sometimes struggles to decipher them as English, which is awkward when listening to an audio!
Just a matter of exposure and getting used to it usually!

message 3498: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments For me the Indian accent is the most difficult to undersand.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Melindam wrote: "It's not so much not understanding it, because it's understandable, if a bit harder to do so, but disliking it very much (which makes me feel bad!!!) :("

Hey, everyone has accents they don't like. I'm personally not a fan of Brummie (Birmingham) or Scouse (Liverpool), and don't get me started on Glaswegian! 😂

Nothing against the people (I even like some Glaswegians 😆), but I much prefer to be listening to less abrasive accents when I "have my ears on", as hubby calls it 😆

message 3500: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Ah, Indian (and most south/south east Asian) is easy peasy for me, as that is the main immigrant group in this part of the UK, so I have lots of exposure.

I generally warn people when I rec an audio with a strong accented Asian narrator (like Salman Rushdie's books), as anyone not used to it would very likely struggle with those.
