Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I signed up with fewer books purely so I could throw in extra long ones! πŸ˜† (I have a few "page count matters" challenges on the go too!)

But looks to me like Sophie has that one well in hand!

Also Cat, did you infect Mel with the spinning curse, or just hand it off to her? If the latter, it'll be safe for you again. We could be dealing with a "hot potato" kind of spinning situation where one of us is "it" and should avoid the wheel?

Of course, if it's more like an infection, we could all end up with it at the same time, in which case we're doomed πŸ˜‚

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I grabbed the other boat trip task that was floating around with Emily Wilde.

It'll be like this until a TT situation when it will switch to under 200 pages.

Not sure how we can tell between hot potato and infection. If hot potato maybe we switch back to Cat.

message 3205: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Under TT we'll be bound to get all 100-175 pagers. 🀭

Naturally.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Just finished a book set in Illinois. Not got anything coming up with 2 authors though...

Also, if we swap Domi's 'A Rideg Valo' with Cat's 'Devil's Breath', we can dispose of Danny Zuko!

message 3208: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Cat, you wanna spin for that one?

message 3209: by Melindam (last edited Feb 05, 2025 07:27AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Sure, Sammy. Domi's book can be swapped. :)

I can spin!

message 3211: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10122 comments Mod
nope! bad move! I'm still infected

Audrey Jr.
1 500 to 650
2 MC murders or kills someone
3 Red cover (at least 50%)
4 Little or synonym in title
5 Standalone book (not part of a series)

At least the cover requirement is UNO-friendly!

message 3212: by Sammy (last edited Feb 05, 2025 07:34AM) (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Ok, so Sophie and I should keep our distance from the two of you so as not to catch it then? πŸ˜†

Luckily I have a 599 on the go πŸ˜‰

message 3213: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments We'll need a new FF book to replace it. I can have a look in a few days if nobody has anything

message 3214: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10122 comments Mod
I can do that and my UNO 1 Yellow!

The Care and Feeding of Waspish Widows (Feminine Pursuits, #2) by Olivia Waite

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Nice!

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I'm gonna make myself get through this book over the next few days. It's taken me over a week to read 150 pages so far! *sigh* (11 days, in fact!)

Does anyone else do this to themselves:

Keep reading books by an author, even though they never or rarely go above an "ok" rating.

I have so many 3 star authors that I still keep picking up regardless. Sarah Waters is one of those, though I don't think this one is going to make it as high as 3 stars!

Who's that Sammy? Sarah Waters? I find her hard going, and have permitted myself never to read another!

ETA I actually liked The Paying Guests the most of the three I've read, mainly because it's set in my manor, so I could pretty much visit the house location and also see the changes in the environs

message 3219: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5692 comments Mod
I'll try to avoid her then! If you all don't enjoy probably not worth it.

message 3220: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments As Cat says, she's really hard work. 2 3-stars and a 2-star so far from me, and I can see this one sticking at 2 also.

I like the idea of her as an author a lot more than the actual books πŸ˜†

message 3221: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments It's like Margaret Atwood. I loved Hag-Seed and The Penelopiad, but aside from that I find her distinctly meh. 2/3 stars all the way.

And still, I see an Atwood book, I buy it. WHY!?

message 3222: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments For some reason I've never felt tempted to try her (SW) books.

message 3223: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Slight improvement:

Wolfgang von Überwald
1 350-450
2 Tagged WEREWOLF at least 10x
3 A reference is made to a real book or author
4 BATH in text
5 Any kind of device (real or fictional) is used for communication

message 3224: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I can grab all but werewolf!

message 3225: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I will be able to pick up werewolf a little later if it's not claimed by then.

message 3228: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Awesome! 😁

I should be done with mine in an hour or so!

message 3229: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments And that's Wolfie done!

Karenin (Anna Karenina)

1 350 to 450
2 train on cover
3 has a love triangle
4 MPG historical fiction
5 a book from this Listopia

message 3230: by Sammy (last edited Feb 07, 2025 04:50AM) (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Happy to take the Listopia task unless someone has one on the go?

ETA: I have The Warden ready to go, which also has MPG historical fiction. JUST short of the word count though *sigh*

message 3231: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I have 2 books as TBR from that list, but both are longer reads, so I don't think I'll get to them any time soon and The Warden is short at least. :)

message 3232: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Sure is. I've not read many Victorian novels at only just over 300 pages! πŸ˜†

Melindam | 8375 comments Sammy,

is there a love triangle in Lessons in Chemistry? It works for the page count.

Hubby just brought it to me form the library.

Originally I wasn't planning on reading it, but your review & the fact that it's been translated and available in my local library tipped the balance. 😊

message 3237: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments No, sorry! Romantic relationships are all very much one-at-a-time and between 2 people only, lol.

But it was a very enjoyable read regardless!

I don't mind about the absence of a triangle, just asked b/c of the task. 😊

message 3239: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments If you enjoy it even half as much as I did, you're in for a good read! 😁

message 3240: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments For the Little or synonym in title task, are we ok with The Ballad of SMALLhope and Pennyroyal, or should we look out for something that isn't a compound word?

hmmmmmm.... I don't hate it.... what do others think?

elsewhere, I'll be picking up The Rise and Reign of the Mammals A New History, from the Shadow of the Dinosaurs to Us by Steve Brusatte which will cover GOLEM in title nicely :)

ETA and might have a scientific "family" tree in there too!
It'll be a day or two mind

I'm ok with it, especially since it's a good book.

SANDWORM is here now:
450+
Tagged sand at least 1
Letters WORM in title
Teeth visible on cover
1 and 8 in page number

I'm not horrified by my spin.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Phew, Sophie hasn't been infected yet! πŸ˜†

But if another super long one is needed in the next few days, I'll be starting a 700+ tomorrow and have Kushiel's Dart coming up at 1000+ too.

message 3246: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Finished off Audrey, and it looks like I'll be able to use my 700 pager! πŸ˜†

Ivan the Terrible (Russia)

1 651+
2 takes place in Russia
3 MC royalty
4 MC married more than once
5 TERROR (any order) found in title

Sophie (drsophie) | 5692 comments Mod
Oh no! You've been infected too!

Sonia's been in isolation, we might need to call on her to spin.

Melindam | 8375 comments Good idea. πŸ˜†

message 3249: by Melindam (last edited Feb 10, 2025 12:46AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Surprisingly, Carrie Soto Is Back is tagged sand 1x.

I've been planning on re-reading it as the only book by TJR I really liked so far. (she may be my Sarah Waters, Sammy πŸ˜…)

I want to try the dramatised, full-cast version, so waiting for my next Audible credit to drop.

message 3250: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I feel exactly the same about TJR πŸ˜†

But I'll give the dramatised version a miss. I vastly prefer a regular audiobook.
