Melindam | 8386 comments I have one 800+ book, but it will take me some time to finish.

We'll see. :)

My niece loves whimpy kid. She has a few, and we raided our library for them.

Domi keeps reading out excerpts for my benefit and laughs out loud at them. 🥰

Melindam | 8386 comments Dios is gone, there is

Hungry Grass

3. Title starts with letter in GRASS
4. Someone finds a corpse
5. Tagged Fae (at least 10 times)

Dominomaj | 42 comments I can take tasks 2 & 3 with a book I just finished. This book is my
29th read of the year. 📔

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13025 comments Right my lovelies... Off to Scotland in the morning and won't have PC/SS access until we get back after Christmas.

I'll try to check in on my phone if I gvet the chance, and I'll let you guys know if I happen to finish anything that fits.

If I don't speak to you all before though, have a fantastic Christmas!

Enjoy Scotland, Sammy!

On 28 Dec we'll be travelling to Prague and stay until the New Year.

Melindam | 8386 comments And I just realised that my kindle edition of Niccolo Book 7 is over 800 pages, though that particular edition is not listed here on GR.
Nevertheless, I'm adding it to that spot as I will finish it still this year (or intend to anyway). 😉

Cat (cat_uk) | 10123 comments Mod
amazing! love how we are ticking through these tasks.

I started my tagged Jewish today; it's a quick one so will probably be done tonight

Cat (cat_uk) | 10123 comments Mod
and it's done!

New new Dr Who monster:

Sea Devils
1 200 to 299
2 Set on the ocean, coast, or on an island
3 "Sea" or "Devil(s)" in title
4 Tagged Pirates (at least 10 times)
5 Ship (incl. space) on cover

message 3062: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13025 comments I have failed epically on the reading front this past week (150 pages of graphic novel, other than that, nada!).

Hopefully I'll get back into the swing of it soon, as I have a couple I'd like to finish before the new year!

message 3063: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8386 comments It's quite natural. :))
I managed to finish a shorter book just before Xmas (that fits exactly nowhere, lol) and made a little progress with MPG War & the 651+ but at a very leisurely pace.

We'll be travelling to Prague tomorrow by train and I'm hoping to make some progress on the 6.5-hour journey. :)

message 3064: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13025 comments New wheel! New wheel! 😁

Also, I have managed a whole 15 pages since I got back! 😂

message 3066: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8386 comments I managed 2 chapters from Niccoloʻ 6 on the train. 😆

Cat (cat_uk) | 10123 comments Mod
well, I realised that I could fill in the shortie space with the St Mary's Xmas story, so that has dispatched the Hungry Grass.

Coming up.....

Fermín Mundaca (Spain/Mexico) !
1 200 to 299
2 Takes place in Mexico or central America
3 Women (>1) on cover
4 A character is kidnapped or enslaved
5 Something empty on the cover (your interpretation)

All setting requirements are 50% +

I'm about to finish soulminder which will work for 4.

Having a debate with myself - I'm 16 books short of my reading goal this year. If I add the picture books I've read the kids I can easily meet it, but feels a bit like cheating!

message 3069: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10123 comments Mod
I don't think it's cheating! and especially not when you've read the same book multiple times!

message 3070: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5692 comments Mod
Tagged heroine 5 times or more is frustrating. Slave to Sensation has tags for virgin-heroine, strong-heroine and kickass-heroine that meet the tag number.

message 3071: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5692 comments Mod
And I've added a load of kids books so target is officially met for the year!

we could go ask the hive mind if there's some flex there for the embedded to work, rather than the exact match?

huzzah!

message 3074: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8386 comments Don't think kids books are cheating either, with you also doing the hard work of narration. ;)

Complete with voices!

message 3076: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5692 comments Mod
Judith gce the ok so that task is now solved.

message 3077: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13025 comments And I just finished Starship Troopers, which took me an embarrasing 2 weeks to read. And for a Heinlein too!

May have been just a smidge burnt out 😆

message 3078: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5692 comments Mod
A year of team challenges can do that!

message 3079: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10123 comments Mod
semi agree, but also immediately leapt onto UNO pre-register!

I'll be switching the skull book around - I've stalled on Company of Liars, but have one that I'll finish later that works.

message 3080: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13025 comments Yeah, I'm really going to need to rein it in this year! Especially when it comes to team challenges that don't play nicely together (book cap "longest books win" vs "read as many shorties as poss" for TW), for the sake of what little is left of my sanity!

I've already dropped a few individual challenges to try and get my updating after each book down to under half an hour (last Easter with the HOB easter egg hunt and water balloon wars - lots of bonus points for cross-posting to other challenges - it took me around 90 minutes for each book!).

That's practically all cast narration. ☺️

Melindam | 8386 comments Prague is a wonderful city, but once again and of course: hardly any reading done despite loving my current reads. Maybe once we are back ... 😅

message 3083: by Melindam (last edited Dec 31, 2024 05:44AM) (new)

Melindam | 8386 comments Talking of Prague: do you have any recommendations for books set in Prague? (And I don't mean Kafka-esque 🤭)

message 3084: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13025 comments I really enjoyed The Unbearable Lightness of Being, which is set in Prague.

Also The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, which is mostly set in Ny, but has some Prague in there too.

Both 4 star reads for me.

Cat (cat_uk) | 10123 comments Mod
I was trying to think of any, and did a quick search to jog memory, and would add Daughter of Smoke & Bone, which has a good flavour of it before it goes bonkers portal fantasy fun.

Apparently A Perfect Spy is (partially) Prague set and good spy fodder

Cat (cat_uk) | 10123 comments Mod
oh, and finished the skull book!

does someone else want to spin, rather than risking my peculiar genius?!

message 3087: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13025 comments You're going to regret asking that... 😆

Nero (Italy / Rome)

1 350 to 450
2 takes place in Italy
3 tagged political 10x
4 MC plays a musical instrument
5 fire on cover

message 3088: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8386 comments Thank you, Cat, thank you Sammy. ☺️

Already read Daughter of Smoke and Bone and agree that it's a pity it went down the slippery slope of ya.

Also read Hrabal, although I just realised that I've never marked it as read here on GR.

message 3089: by Melindam (last edited Jan 03, 2025 03:47AM) (new)

Melindam | 8386 comments Sammy,

I see that The Corrections also fits the page count for the Dragon Queen.

You could move it there and have that one finished off.

I'm only at 35% of Caprice and Rondo. I'm sure it'll fit somewhere else later.

message 3090: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13025 comments Can do!

message 3091: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13025 comments Next up:

Mr Pin & Mr Tulip

1 200-299
2 Flower (can be the word flower or a specific type) in the title
3 POTATO in text
4 tagged Journalism at least 5x
5 character visits an art exhibition or has a profession related to the fine arts

message 3092: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13025 comments The Truth of course works for the journalism task, but I'm still 7 books away from that one in my re-read, so it would take me a while (about 3 years at current rate! 😆)

message 3093: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8386 comments Caprice and Rondo fits task 5 featuring a renaissance painter.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13025 comments Frustratingly my current book features a journalist as one of the MCs, but doesn't have the tags *sigh*

I'm reading The Hobbit. There is fire on cover.

I really like it. 👌
