Melindam | 8381 comments Ah, we are having a curse of the short books now that we are reading tomes. 🤭

Judoon has been dealt with, we have

Dromes

1. 100-175
2. SPIN in text (can be part of a word, like spinning or spindle)
3. Character is trapped (can be physical or metaphorical)
4. Book setting is an imaginary land
5. letters DREAM in title

ah! oh! I picked up a vile office book with 100 pages, so I can take the short short shortie task

ETA: I say vile, it's not, but it is annoying

message 2953: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8381 comments Oh thank heavens, that 100-125 page range is the nastiest of all. Vile. :D

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments No short books from me for a while... I read them all for turf! 😆

I'm looking forward to clearing a few 300-pagers finally once wheel is done!

message 2955: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10123 comments Mod
I've been mainly reading for trickier tasks, so my page count has skewed lower. Happily I've had others who've tackled Count of Monte Cristo / The Stand etc

message 2956: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8381 comments I'm committed to 3 lengthy books right now, but also looking forward to picking up shorter books after Wheel. :)

I'm trying to read whatever I can. My reading has been abysmally below target this challenge. Signed up for 4 a round and only managed 2.

Melindam | 8381 comments Dear Cat,

(view spoiler)

Dear Sophie,

(view spoiler)

Sammy and I are propositioning you to join us and Karen in a Fellowship of a Tolkien reading challenge over at Perks.

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Same laid-back, no-pressure approach as with this one, if you'd consider. 😊🥰

Putting the enticement under spoilers in case Domi may be around later. 🤭

For some reason, it wasn't of Gollam either.

Melindam | 8381 comments Sophie wrote: "Have the 3 of you got a plan regarding team names yet?"

Not really. I kicked the discussion off by suggesting

"Challenge Wraiths" (or maybe the Fellowship of the Challenge Wraiths) as we are as attracted by reading challenges like the wraiths are by the One Ring. 🤭

But would love to hear other suggestions.

I also invited Karen over here to discuss this v-v important aspect of the challenge. 😉

4. The Rivendell Book Society
5. Tomes and Tolkien
6. The Wandering Words

Do you have just the one robot that you are feeding, Karen, or a couple, to keep one clean of GR challenge nonsense?!

As breakfast is my favourite meal of the day (especially if I'm left alone in peace to read a bit - rarely happens ;), I find the appeal of Second Breakfast very strong. 🤭

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments 650+ unread comments on this thread, wow, how long have I been away?

Anywoo... remember me needing a break from Michelle Notaro because her books tend to be... quite heavy on the bad stuff happening to MCs?

Weeeeeeeell, she wrote a short story for the holidays featuring her main characters from the Eldwood Chronicles. The newsletter had a snippet. I'm so glad I'm working remotely because I kinda laughed out loud and I'm still giggling.

That been said, lemme check my KU to see when that one will be available :D

How are you pretty ladies? And Domi?

message 2992: by Melindam (last edited Dec 05, 2024 07:31AM) (new)

Melindam | 8381 comments Hi Sonia!!!

So good to hear from you! 🥰

Domi is well, though fed up with school (as is healthy) and counting back the days to the Xmas hols.

How are You? Eni & your Niece?

message 2993: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments I'm recovering from a few weeks of overtime... and a bit under the weather with my allergies... darn climate changes can't decide which season we are....

Eni is cool... recovering from turf wars LOL

And my niece is on her final stretch before the xmas break.

I still need to put the tree up, but at least I managed to have the advent calendar for her to have fun and get in the spirit.

I also managed to have all Christmas gifts ordered by December 2nd, so, now my house resembles a large warehouse, with boxes everywhere. Because no tree, no place to put the wrapped up presents, so, they stay in the boxes.

We also got advantage of black Friday prices to get some stuff we have been postponing...

The delivery guys already know me by name. LOL

Anyway... No time or mood to put stuff away... BOXES EVERYWHERE.

message 2994: by Melindam (last edited Dec 05, 2024 07:51AM) (new)

Melindam | 8381 comments Talking about overwhelmed, lol.

In Hungary, traditionally we only decorate the trees on 24th Dec (though I usually do it a 1-2 days before), so we have time for that.

We have ordered Domi's present, but not much else, so tomorrow I'm going to do a little shopping. We already did some gingerbread baking with Domi and with one of my friend and her kids. It was so much fun.

message 2995: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments You were on a very well-deserved challenge break, and some of us talk too much (or so my dad always told me as a kid! 😆)

All good here, I have 2 working feet again, and an almost completed kitchen!

How are my favourite Portuguese family?

message 2996: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments We generally don't put our tree up until the 11th (day after daughter's birthday), but since we now just tend to go to my parents', there's no point putting one up at all, especially since it means moving half of hubby's office into the bedroom to do so, and I don't wanna climb over filing cabinets to get into bed any more! 😆

Hey Sonia! 👋
Though I could do without your Xmas present completeness! I'm so far from being sorted on that front it's depressing. And I'm uninspired for suggestions too....

But! New monster

Zygons
1 200 to 299
2 Read a military romance or MPG Military or War
3 Letters UNIT in title
4 3 in publishing date
5 Set in Arizona or a state/country that touches Arizona (Mexico, New Mexico, California, Nevada,Utah)

Well... most of the presents were easy.

Minion's present has been decided for months (her tablet needed replacement), we just went a little overboard with accessories, like headphones, shock resistant cover and tablet pen since she's starting to explore drawing and whatnots.

Eni asked for a puzzle and a new cover for her tablet.

Since I am the only one tableless of the family, we decided to splurge and kinda duplicated the minion's order but for the headphones, since I already have a set.

Our stepdad is always complaining about his cell phone, so we went to check the senior mobile ones, and found one we liked.

The rest is ordinary, legos for the kids - we can't go wrong with lego, some funny t-shirts, we still need to take a Christmas picture for our aunts but already have the frames, yesterday I did some home made pomegranate and raspberry jam - it's a little runny, and tastes more of raspberry, but it turned out tasty. And some chocolates and Christmas mugs. Oh... and some electric toothbrushes that we also had on our to get list for ages.

For the advent calendar, I went a *little* overboard this year and got:
some nail polishes and lip glosses
fidget toys and a chewable necklace - our UK cousins have them and she seemed to want some too
some stationary items
some skincare products like face masks and blackhead stripes - she's 12, all age appropriated, she will not be a sephora kid :P
a fidget mood ring, that Eni is completely jealous
And a time turner necklace which I'm totally planning to steal if she doesn't like it
