It's got unicorns... Just not a singular unicorn.

I am sure we can overlook this minor detail. 😊

Finished off the big cat, now got

Mr Salzella
1 100-175
2 features a theatre or Opera performance
3 Word SALT in the text
4 features ghosts
5 mask on cover or features a character wearing a mask

message 2505: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Yesss, I'm listening to a book about Maria Callas, which also covers "salt" in text.

message 2506: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Concerning a character wearing a mask - Callas sang La Gioconda that takes place in Venice during carnival and her character is wearing a mask.

Are we OK with that? Or is it too indirect?

message 2507: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments It definitely follows the letter of the task. I'd say yes personally, but I vote we let the mod people weigh in 😉

message 2508: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments :))

message 2509: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments If not, the book I'm about to finish has kidnappers wearing masks 😁

Then better put it there, Sammy. :)

message 2511: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Done. 😁

message 2512: by Melindam (last edited Sep 05, 2024 08:57AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Found a cozy mystery with a ghost on Audible plus. Who knows, after the thoroughly depressing Callas bio, I may even end up enjoying it. :)

message 2513: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Let's hope so!

message 2514: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Just realised it also works for the monthly audiobook challenge, so I'll persevere even if I won't like it much. 🙃

Speed it up Mel!

message 2516: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Will do. :D

My current "normal" speed is 1.7, but I can turn it up if I find I dislike it.

message 2517: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments That would be about my speed if I listen without headphones.

With headphones, depending on the book (some are faster than others) it can be almost double that! The discrepencies are sometimes pretty huge between books though. I recently listened to one that was so slow I actually put the speed up to max, and just finished another I couldn't go over 2.4x with. Most can handle 2.8 or 2.9 for me though.

message 2518: by Melindam (last edited Sep 06, 2024 04:17AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Just sped it up to 2.0. It's still a speed I can handle and follow more or less normally.
The last book I did that for was Daughter of the Forest, I set the narration at 2.3 and still thought it would never end, but that book was torture for me anyway.

This book isn't too bad, but I am not mad about it either. Cozy mysteries are just not my thing. Here its helps that there is a ghost and the murder was committed in the 1920s. I will finish, but won't be going on with the series for sure .... no mention of any U-characters ... 😅

message 2519: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Mr Salzella has slunk away, we have

The Summoning Dark instead:
1. 651+
2. a character is guarding something/someone
3. letters DWARF in title
4. person in story has "marked" skin (birthmark, tattoo, scars, etc)
5. Edition read has a dark cover

message 2520: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments I've got the page count and dark cover 😉

Oh, I knew we could count on you with the page count, Sammy. 😊

message 2522: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments I've almost finished my 500-pager, but am waiting to finish it for another challenge. hopefully will be today!

message 2523: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Chased off the werewolf, found a vampire...

Count Magpyr & Family

1 200-299
2 Story features vampires
3 modernisation a plot element (your interpretation. could be house refurb or new computer system)
4 monochrome cover (e.g. Black and white, but other two colour only covers work)
5 bird on cover

message 2524: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I am listening to Crusaders by Dan Jones (cannot link it now), it may (?) pass as monochrome with red and dark red colours on cover, though the letters are white, so I'm not sure...

The Queen of the Elves is vanquished!

Wintersmith has come.

350-450
Season in the title
character lives in a palace
someone is under a spell
all letters in SMITH found in the title

message 2526: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Hmmm, have some other challenge tasks to go check out, will see if I can kill multiple birds with my picks (one lives in hope!)

message 2527: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5692 comments Mod
Once I've finished the 2 I have on the go, I can read The Innocent Sleep that works for 350-450 and under a spell. I'd also say that October is living in a palace during it.

message 2528: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments I've grabbed the modernisation task. Have my eyes peeled for a tattooed character too 😆

just finished a book where a character had magic tattoos, but needed it to finish another monster, naturally.

message 2529: by Melindam (last edited Sep 09, 2024 01:15AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Found an autumn audiobook in the Plus catalogue. Will grab the season task. :)

message 2530: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments I managed to strike off the SMITH task with The Mist. Not many spare letters there 😆

I've also almost done with the bookbinder.

After that, I have a LOT of 100-200 page books coming up!

message 2531: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments The autumn book's narrayor's voice makes me want to scratch my eyes out.
After Joy Nash, she must be the 2nd most irritating narrator I've come across. She uses a totally unnatural sounding, squeaky, high-pitched, breathy, saccharine voice and sounds like she's speaking through her nose. Absolutely awful!

But I have only 1 hour left, so I won't give up now.

message 2532: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10123 comments Mod
oh no! a bad narrator is THE WORST!

what's she like on normal speed? sometimes the speeding up makes a bad experience horrible. ending on a slow speed with less hate for the narrator might be good?

message 2533: by Sammy (last edited Sep 10, 2024 07:04AM) (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments UGH! Nothing worse than a bad narrator!

I once listened to the same book twice with two different narrators. The first one was a Librivox recording (and part of the reason I gave up on that site), and then I listened again with a professional narrator.

The book went from 1 to 4 stars. I couldn't believe how much of the hate was down to the way it was read!

message 2534: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments On the positive side, I'm just starting a book by one of our favourite narrators 😉

I had Richard A a couple back, and I've a Kobna coming up. *sigh with pleasure*

message 2536: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments That's more like it!

I've got a few other good ones coming up... Colin Firth, Zara Ramm,
Miriam Margolyes, Ray Porter, Gabriel Byrne and a couple more RA.

message 2537: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments She sounded pretty much the same regardless of the speed (tried different tempos) and the story, while not terrible, is average at best, so happy to leave it behind in 30 minutes. :D

message 2538: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Richard A ♡

message 2539: by Melindam (new)

Yay!

I'd missed the new Peter Grant coming out - that's definitely a good one for audio.

I'm enjoying the clipped upper class English accent used by the narrator for Memento Mori.

I've got there eventually and defeated the Hoop Snake.

Galatea up now.

Page number is a multiple of 50

Melindam | 8375 comments In the hope of a (not-too-far) future wheel challenge I have started gathering some U-books. 🤭

I found this in the audible(com) plus catalogue yesterday: Upland Autumn: Birds, Dogs, and Shotgun Shells.

Not that I'm in favour of hunting, au contraire, but don't look a gift U-book in the mouth ....

message 2544: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5692 comments Mod
Wheel challenge... Now that's a novel idea. I don't know why you'd think you'd need a lot of U options for it.

I've found an MM series on KU which has a U in the series title. Think there's another 4 of them I can read so currently not searching too hard.

I, for one, am utterly discombobulated at Mel's unaccountably outrageous communique that stretch vowels are upcoming! Inconceivable!

message 2547: by Melindam (last edited Sep 11, 2024 03:23AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Sometimes I have these inexplicable, half-formed, wild thoughts emerging from my subconscious.

I need to consult a psychotherapist, obviously. 😅 This U-fixation is rather disconcerting.

message 2548: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5692 comments Mod
I'm not sure that you need a psychotherapist. It sounds instead like some chipmunks might be heading your direction. Please let them know of any ideas and wild thoughts as we find these to be very enlightening.

message 2549: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments and have all those teams down on me like a ton of bricks.... I'm not sure I'm up to it, LOL

But if I get any ideas, you might get some anoymous letters from well-wishers. ;)
