Melindam | 8375 comments Sammy, if you have a 500+ pager coming up and maybe it could cover trickery for Cyclops, my The Ringed Castle (The Lymond Chronicles, #5) by Dorothy Dunnett would work for set over 50% in Russia and starts with letters in YETI.

Although now I come to think about it, my sheperdess book also covers trickery (she uses "tricks" to win an auction, also tricks have to be used to deal with the sheep and cows)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments It's a Charles Dickens biography, so no characters :(

But I'm planning on re-reading All Systems Red after, and Murderbot definitely has a devious streak 😁

Definitely! 🥰

But I remove my book from the 500 slot and use it for Yeti tasks instead.

Naturally.

Eni and I were looking at Amsterdam maps yesterday, trying to decide where to park and which card to get - I wanted to do the Hop on Hop off circuit, she wanted the I am amsterdam card, and saw at one of the corners a building called Tony's Chocolonely Super Store. So of course I won't going to pass the opportunity to spend 6 euros (actually 18) and waaaaay too much time customizing my very own chocolate bar.

LOL

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Yeah, so with your book for the trickery, since it's there already. I'm sure Murderbot will find another home when the time comes 😁

Tony's is my son's favourite chocolate! (he adores the salted caramel) I got him a tony's advent calendar from Schiphol when we were passing through last November.

Must check that place out next time I manage to go over there!

Sounds great. At the end of October, we are going to travel to Madrid and spend a week there. As my son is train-mad, we will be travelling to some other cities on RENFE, probably Seville and Cordoba.

He also loves chocolate, so I have to make some research into chocolate places. 😂

Spanish chocolate isn't as good as the Dutch one though. If you like honey and nuts, make sure you taste their Turrón. Nothing beats Spanish Turrón. They range between soft and hard, from almonds to pine nuts, and every single one is perfection.

My favourite chocolate brand is actually Côte d'Or. On my last trip to Bruges I got A LOT OF THEM!!!!!!

And better yet, I ate them all, because it was "too rich" for some taste buds *giggles*

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments No holidays as such planned here until Iceland next summer, but hubby and I are planning a 2-night break in Northumberland in a month's time, to go visit Bamburgh Castle and stay on Lindisfarne (Holy Island).

Nothing like a book-related getaway, lol.

That he is. Nobody does tapas as good. They even have mini paella dishes.

They also had cherries at 40 euros the kilo, which I ignored, because sure, we were in the middle of the winter... but fruit shouldn't be that expensive. It's Fruit, not the Queen's Crown.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments I'm only half-way through so far, but I'm really enjoying Charles Dickens A Life by Claire Tomalin , and suspect you might too Mel! 😊

message 222: by Melindam (last edited Sep 01, 2023 04:12AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Glad you are, Sammy. :)

I will make a note of this. I read an Austen biography by this author and really liked it.

message 223: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Was that the one you read recently?

And I have a re-read to do for another challenge, with a page count of 602! I'll not read that one for a few days yet, so will keep my eyes peeled for another 500 page monster, lol.

message 224: by Sammy (last edited Sep 01, 2023 02:24AM) (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments although having said that, it does also have a tiger on the over, so may work for at least a couple of Drop Bear tasks if it comes to it 😁

ETA: Can't remember clearly, but I think it might also have a surprise-y kind of ending...

Melindam | 8375 comments I read the JA biography a long time ago. :D

Recently I read an Agatha Christie bio by Lucy Worsley. It was very good.

It's one of my favourite podcasts. The host has a comedian and a historian on every episode to discuss a particular topic (but no Tudors or world wars) so have listened to things like the history of timekeeping and lots of interesting non-royal people.

Melindam | 8375 comments Just saw that for some curious reason, we have a new monster wheel

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

with shorter page count requirements, but with everything else unforgiving about them. 😅

Welp... at least the page count is lower... lol!

message 234: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments I just finished Polyphemus. Should I spin the new wheel?

I take it the new monsters will need to be added to the SS somehow in order to auto-fill the tasks?

message 235: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Went for it... figured it couldn't be that bad... (famous last words, lol!)

The Rephaim (The Bone Season) - Very Hard

350-400
MC is unusually strong
"veil" in text
Title starts with PH (can ignore article)
Book currently on the list: https://www.goodreads.com/genres/most... (series substitutions ok)

message 236: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments My current book is 365 pages but doesn't fit anything else. naturally.

message 237: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5692 comments Mod
I feel like this might be a lot of individual books. The list doesn't look too bad to me and might be able to get veil in it or the page length

message 238: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Feel free to move mine if you can fit multiples :)

also, I managed to move monsters to the SS successfully. Woo!

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments With the drop bear task "read a book with author initials found in VEGEMITE", does it have to be both initials, or just any of them?

message 243: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10123 comments Mod
I think both?

I'm other news: finished my 800pager, which was popcorn. Though I didn't enjoy that all the baddies were also depicted as being sexually voracious and depraved with it...

message 244: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments okie dokie, in that case we need something for the VEGEMITE task still :)

Cretan Bull
1 350 to 450
2 white cover
3 where something physical is destroyed (e.g., building burning down and not a relationship being ruined)
4 MC ignores important advice
5 7 in the page count

message 248: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments My next book in the Lymond series will cover tasks 3-5
