Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments I can grab the page count 😉

it's also MPG romance. No idea if it fits anything else until I read it.

message 2404: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I was counting on you, Sammy, with the page count. :D

message 2405: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments I'll start it when I finish my current one. which is an 800-pager, in case anything pops up in the meantime 😆

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Teehee! it's been sitting in my library with a "pre-ordered" tag on it for a loooooong time now. Glad it's finally almost here 😁

message 2408: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Ooh, just saw from the sheet that Cat is reading Race of Scorpions. :)

Let me know how you like it. :)

I preferred Spring of the Ram to it, but it was still a 4-star-read for me.

I have already purchased Unicorn Hunt, but feel a bit reluctant to waste a U-book in case there may be a Wheel-challenge some time in the autumn. :D

message 2409: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I also discovered that Book 4 (Scales of Gold) has a U-character, but it was too late by then to stop. :D

I'm enjoying it so far, though there has to be a lot of suspension of disbelief over how clever Niccolo is, with all his planning!

Sophie (drsophie) | 5692 comments Mod
I'm about to buy To Lie with Lions to continue to Niccolo spread. I'd be amazed if you guys don't finish the series before me.

message 2412: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Oh yes, I am stil struggling with taking on board both about his supposed genius (though I kind of resigned myself to that) as well as his being so hawt that all the world and their wives/husbands/aunts/uncles want to bed him (Dunnett gas managed to convince me of a lot of things, but never this).

I happened to post my politely-worded doubts about this hotness-issue on the DD Society FB page and that caused quite a lot of pearl clutching. ;)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10123 comments Mod
He's got that massive scar on his face!

I'd mentally put his irresistibility down to his bod and mind. Brains and humour being generally agreed to be alluring.
And then once he's bedded them he has Skillz, of course !

At the moment everyone is more excited about how gorgeous bastard King James is...

Melindam | 8375 comments His "bovine" eyes get mentioned a lot (also in book 4) and that stuck with me.

message 2416: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Finished The Agency for Scandal for the 500 page task, which was surprisingly fun!

I'm on another 1000+ now if it comes up 😁

I finished a purple cover, and spun the Greek wheel:

Mares of Diomedes
1 200 to 299
2 Fire on the cover
3 character gets poisoned (food poisoning is acceptable, does not have to be fatal)
4 Title contains all the letters of HERA
5 Goodreads rating between 3 and 3.5 (inclusive)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10123 comments Mod
and am reading the next Niccolo book, which is set in Africa - Mel, Sophie, you can confirm it's more than 50% in Africa, right?

message 2421: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Yes, I'd say it is at least 50% Africa. :)

message 2422: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I wanted to buy Unicorn Hunt on kindle next to my audiobook, (not that John Banks isn't a great narrator, he totally is) but amazon charges a ridiculous 38 usd for it (all other books in the series are between 12-16 usd). Not even a DD book is worth that much, let alone an electronic version. :S

message 2423: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5692 comments Mod
Ooof that's a ridiculous amount. I've just admitted to myself that while my mum's paperback copies have sentimental value, the text is just too small and densely packed and I should buy them.

I'll see whether I can talk to Mr Sophie about whether there is a way to share the copies of the later ones (To Lie With Lions on) with you.

Grendal's Mother has been slain.

Ropen has come out of the woodwork instead:

100 to 175
Light source on cover
Letters in REOPEN in Title
Author name starts with PN or G
MC goes outside at night

The other open tasks are:
Fire on the cover
Goodreads rating between 3 and 3.5 (inclusive)
open plain on cover
10 in page count

message 2425: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments In the meantime it went up to 43 usd.

Crazy.

Thank you, Sophie. ♡ That's so very kind, but not necessary. ♡
I am planning to buy the later copies as I get to each book in the series (but deff not for 38 or 43 usd!). :))

Believe it or not, but I actually have the pagecount covered !!

Melindam | 8375 comments 2 questions.

1. Miss Buncle Married (Miss Buncle #2) by D.E. Stevenson

there is a lamp (though it's not lit, I think) on the cover - are we OK with it as light source?

2. A Pál utcai fiúk by Ferenc Molnár

I know it's pushing it, but Domi and I are reading it as it is a compulsory book for the upcoming school year (it is very good, but I think it is not for 10-year-olds - but obviously rigid, stupid school curricula doesn't care!) and maybe, just maybe it could be OK for "plain on cover"? (I know it's not very open. )

message 2428: by Melindam (last edited Aug 26, 2024 07:46AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Finding a book for 3-3,5 rating is tough. I found only 2 books on my TBR which are even close and still don't work, the rating average is 3.54 / 3.55. 😣

The Sagan Diary by John Scalzi is 3.33. I read it during Book Games so wouldn't reread, but it's 100 pages and I thought was much better than that ranking.

message 2430: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Ready Player Two is 3.43

Unfortunately I have no intention of reading it 😆

oh! just checked my book I finished this morning (on the basis that actually it wasn't great) : 3.01!
but it was on a Turf list, so there's that!

message 2432: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments One negative and two positives makes it worth it maybe? lol.

I just checked my tbr and the lowest I had was 3.51, naturally 😆

AND it was a closet book! so all sorts of wins, and an author not to follow either

Yay! Ticking off things on so many lists!

I've just come across this and had to share:
There’s a rhyming Italian expression for saying “take it or leave it” that goes o mangi questa minestra o salti dalla finestra. It means “either eat this soup or throw yourself out the window”.

Do you ladies have a favorite Discworld Monster you'd like me to use for the picture?

The wheel will go up in the next few days so I can put the links in the Sept newsletter.

I'm not nearly that invested or knowledgeable about the different monsters, so whatever pic you'd like I'm happy to use.

message 2440: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I'm not really partial to any of them, so am happy to go with what the others suggest or you choose, Judith. :)
