oh Sammy, a while ago you were asking about books with sports theme, yes? anyway, I just read Indian Horse which foregrounds ice hockey against a Candian First Nation's life. Not an easy read, but I enjoyed it a lot. and the ice hockey was portrayed really well I thought

Melindam | 8381 comments Iron man is gone. We have

Triffid
1. 200 to 299
2. Plot involves something that usually doesn't move, like a plant or castle
3. Three of something on cover
4. "decompose" in text
5. Blind or disabled MC or author

Does Peeta count as an MC? Cos if so he'd work for disabled

message 2209: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments If we stress the difference between MC and POV character, I'd say definitely! He has a lot of "page time", and is essential to the storyline.

Nooo! What is wrong with them all?!

Team Hot Prof will lend what support they can but the lack of sponsor points is hamstringing us a bit.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Wound down the clockwork droids, and decided to try chasing that chupacabra again. naturally I failed...

Bunyip
1 200 to 299
2 Seal or dog on cover
3 Read a book with a ecological message/ theme (your interpretation)
4 Takes place in a rural area
5 Letter Y in title

message 2221: by Sammy (last edited Jul 18, 2024 03:55AM) (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments I have a gazillion dogs on cover. Next up in a series with dogs on cover also fits the page count and set in rural area

message 2222: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8381 comments I guess Mockingjay works for strong ecological message.
Domi's reading HP1, if dog on cover is needed as back-up, in case you want to read sth else, Sammy. :)

I'm reading The Rise and Fall of Dinosaurs - ecological theme there, of evolution into niches etc

I'm happy to read it because it also covers the rural thing, and it's a fun series.

Do we count "Harry Potter and the..." as part of the title? (I do) Domi can put HP in the Y in title task then.

message 2226: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8381 comments He'll be still some time reading it, so we can probably use it for sth else later. :)

message 2230: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8381 comments I'll put my Mockingjay for Y in title and Domi's HP can go to the page count of the Triffid.

Melindam | 8381 comments If you run across a book with a red cover, feel free to evict mine. I don't think I'll be able to start it before next week.

The hot spell is still insistent in HU, though we can be thankful for 34 C "only" instead of 37-38, but it still goes on. Work is crazy and my reading has slowed down to new lows. πŸ˜ͺ

message 2232: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments I used up most of my red covers during a certain challenge recently. Greens and yellows too πŸ˜†

message 2233: by Sammy (new)

Melindam | 8381 comments Being landlocked has its drawbacks and I need this annual sea-vitamin, but I told the boys that next summer it will be Scotland (and no, I DON'T CARE about the weather! 😊 )

message 2239: by Sammy (last edited Jul 18, 2024 06:35AM) (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Yeah, that's why our (almost) annual getaway is to the coast too, though it's almost unheard of we travel outside of England/Scotland. I'd love too, but it's just too bloomin' expensive!

If you avoid the west coast, Scotland in summer is actually considerably nicer weather-wise than yorkshire is!

message 2240: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8381 comments The last time I visited was in 2011 - that was only Edinburgh for a few days and a daytrip to Yellowcraigs Beach with great, sunny weather (I'm wearing a sleevesless tee on one of the photos).

Before that it was in 2003 for 8 unforgettable days, making a tour with dear friends from Derby, getting as far as John O'Groats and finishing at Skye (that place still has a hold on me) and we had this unbelievable luck with the weather: it only rained in Edinburgh, otherwise it was sunny all the time. πŸ₯°

On Skye we stayed in a B&B with a view to Portree Bay and the Old Man of Storr. I cried when we left.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Last I heard they were having a great time! And my dad was appreciative of the free bar πŸ˜†

My mum will be loving the sun. She's one of those people that spends 5 minutes in the sun and she's the colour of a walnut. My dad and I only have to look out the window at the sunshine and we're lobster πŸ˜‚

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments If you've not been yet (and even if you have) the Cairngorms are lovely, and Ballater in particular is a lovely village, with soooooo many beautiful walks nearby, for all levels of experience.
It also has an award-winning ice cream parlour which sells amazing ice cream! 😁

message 2244: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8381 comments Ballater sounds great! And we are all fans of icecream.

I haven't been there. Seems

I went around the place (Blair Atholl, Pilochry, Inverness :)
