nothing at the moment or on the near horizon. and MPG Poetry during a challenge is annoying! I do have an MPG Poetry I want to read, but it's low 100s page count so doesn't hit the audio / word count requirement :(

message 2158: by Melindam (last edited Jul 01, 2024 03:20AM) (new)

Melindam | 8388 comments I could do chemical element with Scales of Gold, but I don't think I can get to it before next week.

If you find anything sooner, just delete it.

With plenty of unlikeable characters, it also covers perspective change plus the page count.

message 2159: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8388 comments It may probably work for warfare, but will see when I actually get reading

message 2160: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8388 comments I think Sophie's Catching Fire could go either to "Theme of criticism of warfare or violent conflict" or to "kidnapping important to plot/
takes place in USA".

message 2161: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13036 comments Forgot to update Irrwurz! Sorry about that.

2 "Mars" in text
3 Armor or helmet on cover
4 Takes place in a cold climate

Peace Talks covers 5 and should be done in a couple of days.

message 2168: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13036 comments hmmm... steampunk wouldn't normally be a problem, but for some reason I only have them in print copies, and I have a stack of those to get through already at the moment.
If nobody else beats me to it, I can probably read one after the mid-month BOM and Mockingjay are out of the way...

message 2169: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8388 comments No hurry.

Having the best evening. We think Mr 6 is probably dyslexic as he really struggles with his phonics and reading. We've just bought him some Batman phonics books. The look of joy on his face that it's a book with a story he enjoys and that he can read himself is incredible!

He normally rants about reading his school books but wants to read 2 or 3 of these despite them being harder.

message 2171: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13036 comments awwww, that's awesome. I firmly believe that anyone can become a reader if they try the right book for them. Glad you found something he enjoys!

message 2172: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8388 comments Awww, how lovely, Sophie. ♡

message 2173: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8388 comments BTW, I pesuaded Domi to take one for the Team with the Poetry book. We don't mind about page count for this one, right (as long as it's not us having to read)? ;)

message 2174: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13036 comments That's awesome! Domi doesn't have the restrictions we all have right now :D

message 2175: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13036 comments I'm shuffling some stuff around, and will start on a steampunk today 😁

message 2176: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8388 comments Yaay! :)

I will read the July Backroom BOM, which will work for red cover. However, start time depends on whether I'll get chosen to write DQs or not, so leaving it unclaimed for the time being.

message 2177: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13036 comments I'm sad I don't get to read my favourite book for the backroom BOM. Extra points for favourite books should totally be a thing! 😁

message 2178: by Melindam (last edited Jul 10, 2024 01:31AM) (new)

Melindam | 8388 comments I voted for your book Sammy, for (a)moral support.(giggles) I'm sorry it didn't win.

Also hoping you and your leg feel better.

message 2179: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8388 comments Chimera is gone, new monster incoming...

message 2180: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8388 comments And now that I have read finished my doorstoppers earlier this month, of course what we get is...

Kraken
1. 651+
2. Ship on cover
3. Author name (first or last) starts and ends with the same letter (e.g., Andromeda)
4. Character goes swimming
5. 8 in the series number (e.g., #8, #18, #0.8)

message 2181: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13036 comments No problem. I have a 900 pager coming up! 😁

message 2182: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8388 comments Yaaayyy! How are U feeling, Sammy?

message 2183: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13036 comments Not bad actually! I've not needed any painkillers the past couple of days, and today is the last day of having to spend all day with my foot up. (also last day of giving myself bloodthinner injections! woohoo!)

Tomorrow hubby has promised to wash my hair, and I might even venture into the garden at that point.

Watch it rain all day, lol.

message 2184: by Melindam (last edited Jul 10, 2024 03:29AM) (new)

Melindam | 8388 comments I wish we could trade half of your rain with half of our heat (36-38 C). It's terrible, plays havoc with my blood pressure and I am hating every minute of it (and we cannot see the end).

message 2185: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5692 comments Mod
Woohoo glad that the bloodthinners are nearly done and you are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I'd send you some of our rain and swap about 5 degrees of heat if we can arrange that. Not going to take half your heat though, sorry.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13036 comments Oh wow! No, we've had 3 days of sunshine this summer, and not likely to get much better 😢

My parents are currently on a river cruise and should be getting to Hungary in a few days. I suspect my dad will be staying deep in the bowels of the ship. (he gets burnt easily. I had to get it from somewhere, lol)

I've got an 18 I could read when I've finished off my books for the mini. No ships immediately on the horizon though.

Oh, I wish we had some tamer weather to offer for them. ALAS.

First we were told the heatwave will subside by Saturday, but now the whole of next week looks like there'll be 35-37 degrees until next Friday at least. :(

Awesome! I'm sure I can find a ship if I need to, but may be a little while...

It's a really great day for us if we hit 17! It's mid-july and I'm wearing a jumper!! 😒

Hope it settles down soon for you!

message 2191: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8388 comments If I can get to read Paul Newman's biography, we can have task 3 covered.

I may not be reading A Nobleman's Guide to Seducing a Scoundrel in the near future. It's quite pricey on kindle right now, so I may skip and listen to Newman's book instead .

This killer heat has upended my nice reading plans... I feel restless and irritated and may need to regroup a bit.

message 2192: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8388 comments Don't know how much time your parents will have in HU, but I presume the cruise will stop at Budapest. I'd recommend them to try one of the baths that are close to the Danube port: https://www.gellertbath.hu/ or https://en.rudasfurdo.hu/

message 2193: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13036 comments I think they have 2 days in Budapest, so I'll pass on the info, thank you! 😁

message 2194: by Melindam (last edited Jul 10, 2024 04:05AM) (new)

Melindam | 8388 comments And here is a restaurant well worth trying (very close to the Opera House), pricey, but very good food and a spectacular interior garden: https://twentysixbudapest.com/

For a trad. Budapest coffee place experience (close to Danube and port) I'd recommend https://centralgrandcafe.hu/en/. Gerbaud is also nice and close and famous.... but it would only be my 2nd choice. ;) https://gerbeaud.hu/en/

I guess everyone is recommending the New York Cafe, but.... I mean the building is spectacular, but you cannot book ahead and the queues are terrible, especially in this heat .... honestly.. imo it's just not worth it. :)

We're just about at 20 in the south Sammy. Still not appropriate summer weather.

And now I want a holiday to Budapest in the early autumn. Local recommendations are always a treat.

Happy to give further recs for Budapest & around. :)
