Melindam | 8381 comments Ah and just realised that the narrator of Salt & Broom is called Elizabeth Bower.

Are we OK with using her in lieu of the author?

message 1952: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8381 comments Also, Happy Lilac Day!

How do they rise up.... rise up high!

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Oh wow, it's that time again already?! Time flies, lol.

message 1955: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments I've checked all my TBR, and no EB or BE authors at all.

I have no objections to re-reading a Bronte, but it wouldn't be until June, and then only if it works for whatever evil fun certain people have lined up for Book Games 😆

I've got a few to read before end of May for the SRC, but after I get through them I can try for an EB/BE

All That’s Left in the World and it's one that works for the TBR closet too :)

message 1957: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8381 comments Domi will finish Matilda today and then spin for a new monster.
He seems to be loving this book even more than when we read it first 2 or so years ago. 🤗

message 1958: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments I've grabbed the "bi" task and the plague task. Both should be done in a couple of days.

The south/central America task won't be a problem after the 1st 😆

I've been biting my tongue about that for aaaages!

message 1960: by Melindam (last edited May 28, 2024 05:04AM) (new)

Melindam | 8381 comments Yes, South/Central America is a given now. :D

I was hoping that Love in the time of cholera would also be tagged for plague, but it has only 4 tags. Booo

message 1961: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Not a problem, I've been wanting to read The Plague, but had to finish off the final books for another challenge first (got done last night), so can get it done tomorrow.

Now Cat, what is the use of having mods on the team if we don't get inside information like that? 😂

message 1963: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8381 comments And just realised that my planned Crete-book, The Moon-Spinners was made into a movie back in the days (1964). 😊

We both failed you on that one!

Dominomaj | 42 comments I finished my book Matilda. I loved it. 😍

message 1966: by Dominomaj (new)

Dominomaj | 42 comments The new monster is

Raxacoricofallapatorian
1 350 to 450
2 Large family in story
3 MC involved with politics (your interpretation)
4 Green cover (>50%)
5 "calcium" in text

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Nice one Domi!

message 1968: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments So... I have a problem... I am not in a reading mood... sometimes it happens... so I think I'm going to take down my claimed book... And if I manage to pick up a book... which I haven't... I'll check if there is a task it will fit.

message 1969: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8381 comments No worries, Sonia. :)

message 1970: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8381 comments I am happy to say that I am absolutely enjoying Niccolò Rising. Thought I'd be bored by all the details on trade, etc, but on the contrary, I am fascinated by it all.

I haven't really connected to the characters and I don't think this series will ever pack the emotional punches of the Lymond books for me, but I absolutely want to go on with Book 2. 😊

Don't worry about it! Reading should be fun! 😉

Melindam | 8381 comments Sammy wrote: " Reading should be fun! 😉"

I will keep telling that to myself when I'll be reading Me and the Cute Catastrophe (Good Grief, Idaho #1) by Jessie Gussman for the Idaho setting. 🤭

The cover blurb already sounds terrible, but it's short and it's a kindle freebie. 😅

message 1973: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments I'm gonna need to keep telling myself that with the upcoming BOM, I expect 😆

I'm hoping it's going to be another Schwab situation, where I detested Addie Larue, but loved the Darker Shades books!

message 1974: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Dang it! and now I can't read the backroom BOM either (again already read this year).

If it wasn't for bad luck...

message 1975: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8381 comments 😪

I just checked and the kindle version is 2.50 USD so I just bought it.

Thanks for the audio warning.

Actually I wanted to read Book 2 in this series some time anyway, so might as well read this one, too. :)

message 1976: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments The audio was soooooooooooo bad! 🥴

I read both of them (was kinda forced to for another challenge) and they were both ok. Really not my cup of tea, and the historical inaccuracies made me want to trow things, but as far as such books go, certainly not even close to the worst I've read, lol.

As far as I can tell people who enjoy this kind of book and can cope with historical "oopsies" love it, so I'm guessing it'll do well as the BOM.

message 1977: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8381 comments I love your "historical oopsies" term. Need to remember and use it some time. 🤭

There is a backroom bom?

I swear the evil mastermind that created the backroom was pure genius!!!!

message 1979: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Yes it's The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen (The Doomsday Books, #1) by K.J. Charles . A lot... tamer... than what we generally enjoy back there, lol. Unusually, traditionally published too 😆

Would that genius be a certain person from Portugal, by any chance? 😉

message 1980: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments And it was such a selfless act... to find a way for mostly erotica readers not to feel left out on points... without a secret agenda like having a buddy read of the last Ty&Zane book when it came out or anything!!!

Seriously amazing!

Meh. I'm still on the opinion that those should be allowed here.. we had black dagger brotherhood buddy reads in here, and Lisarenee was the mod leader at the time. Yes, we didn't have a backroom sister group... and yes, books like cut & run are way to graphic to have here... but regency? Oh well.

finished Heathcliff & Cathy, spun

Jinmenju
1 350 to 450
2 "laughing" in text
3 Human head on cover
4 MPG Humor
5 Set in Japan, China, India, or Persia (Iran, Egypt, Turkey, Afghanistan, and Pakistan)

I'm currently reading on that fits for #1, 3, 5 (and I'll double check for laughing) :)

ETA: laughing found too, so we just need MPG Humour

message 1983: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments I'm just starting a Bill Bryson, which is probably mpg humour. will check in a bit when I'm on my computer

message 1984: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments So the Red death is gone, and instead we have this guy again:

Balrog (LOTR)

1 350-400
2 Horns or antlers on cover
3 "Deep" in title or series name
4 3 and 7 in page count
5 Red text on cover

message 1985: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments At least the horns thing shouldn't be a problem? 😂

message 1986: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5692 comments Mod
We might all have given those to other team members...

message 1987: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Nobody's claimed any in our team yet, so no doubt I'll be hunting down some dubious freebie to fill that slot.

Sophie (drsophie) | 5692 comments Mod
2 of our 5 are claimed. I'm sure Mel or I will end up with something weird to fill any gaps.

message 1989: by Melindam (last edited May 30, 2024 05:47AM) (new)

Melindam | 8381 comments Domi has a book that works for calcium, so I added that. :)

Melindam | 8381 comments Sophie wrote: "2 of our 5 are claimed. I'm sure Mel or I will end up with something weird to fill any gaps."

We will, won't we... LOL. I have already checked the GR horns list, but most books on my kindle are too expensive for the content they are offering. 🤭

message 1991: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8381 comments Unfortunately I already reread Legends & Lattes (Legends & Lattes, #1) by Travis Baldree .

message 1992: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments I've not read that one yet, but I have the kindle version, so will have to see if I can get to it in time... Quite a few print books lined up right now (though I may just postpone Starling House a couple of weeks, which will free up some time... 🤔)

message 1993: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8381 comments I realised that apart from The Moon-Spinners all my upcoming books are either kindle or print versions, so I used my remaining audible credit for The Spring of the Ram (The House of Niccolo, #2) by Dorothy Dunnett that has horns on it.

If anyone finishes another horn(y)-book sooner, just delete it from the spot. 😊

message 1996: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments I've just added Love in the Time of Cholera to the appropriate slot. did we ever settle on a start date for that one Mel?
I just finished a book, so could start it now, but if folk aren't ready yet, I'll dive into Agatha Christie instead 😁

message 1997: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8381 comments We didn't settle for the date. I need to get to 38% of Starling House now b/c of DQs (and the beginning is not very auspicious), but happy to start on the GGM book afterwards. Any time after 3 June suits me. :)

message 1998: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments You're not helping me want to actually pick up that book, you know 😆
I only own it because of my Illumicrate subscription, and when it arrived I seriously considered cancelling straight away.
Did I mention I hated her other book I read? 😂

I shall go spend some time with mr. Poirot. Shorter books until after the weekend suits me anyway.

message 1999: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8381 comments I have The 10 thousand doors Book by her on audio, but haven't listened to it yet, so this is my first book by her.

So far it's reads like a rather typical, bleak ya-fantasy...

Have fun with Monsieur Poirot. :)

message 2000: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Most people loved that one. I really didn't. (didn't hate it quite as much as Addie Larue, but it's up there, lol)

I just have really weird tastes in YA books. Mostly I don't like them, so don't take my word for it! 😆
