Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments My current book, Talon (The Brinnswick Chronicles, #5) by Michele Notaro is 424 pages. And I'm pretty sure the main goal is to kill the evil drow king. But it might be just defeat him. I shall continue reading to decide.

I'm enjoying the translation so far!

Why, in all the retellings, was there no mention of Hera tricking Zeus into sex to distract him from the soap-opera war-watching?! I was not expecting a nookie interlude at that point!

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments They're greek Gods... They're always at it with someone or other! 😆

true! but we were in the midst of Trojan's slaughtering the Greeks whilst Achilles' was sullking, and suddenly Hera's all "I'm gonna hafta distract the Big Man from all this blood shed..... hmmmm.... only option is to love-drug him and then he'll be all ready for some nookie, distract him and let the Greeks retreat"

Melindam | 8375 comments Can we interpret 2 years bw book publications as "long"? 😅

I am currently reading Pride, Prejudice, and Other Flavors by Sonali Dev (which BTW is a perfectly OK story in itself, but a very weak P&P "retelling", so apart from the obvious JA-bandwagon-marketing I don't really see why it needed to masquerade as one).

It's my first book by her, but checked her publication dates and her previous book before was published in 2017. Otherwise she seems to be a 1 book/year author.

Cat (cat_uk) | 10123 comments Mod
2 doesn't feel long, but it did make me check: we could use Time's Convert - 4 years between #3 and it's publication. plus 8 years since I read #3 and this one.

that good? (unlike the book!)

Dang.

Okay, nobody is allowed to say my mind is evil after this.

Also, we are all in agreement next monster needs to be a Vegi-Might one, right? right?

Because who would resist the urge to fight the scary gingerbread man?!

Noooo, not the grumdrop buttons!

Melindam | 8375 comments Cat,

I added the names of Vegi-Might Monsters to the tabs "Sheet 3" + Monsters List (I added them to the end and then just did the "sort from A to Z thing). Hope I did not make a mess.

You are aware of who we have as mods now and in the past? You'd fit right in!

Melindam | 8375 comments Ready for a New New Monster?

message 1721: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Hundred Knot Bamboo Tree

1. 200 to 299
2. Number in title or series (not series number)
3. Book where labor conditions or workers rights is central to the plot
4. Tagged Asia (at least 10 times) or a country in Asia
5. Yellow and/or green cover (>50% combined)

message 1722: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments I changed my mind. I don't want trees.

Although, the sentient killer trees from the last inkeeper would make a nice monster.

Ooof ok... Anyone got the colour from UNO at least?

message 1725: by Melindam (new)

message 1726: by Melindam (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Just finished November 9, which is perfect timing.

And finished my last green book yesterday! 😢

message 1728: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Will also be finishing System Collapse this eve for the page count.

message 1729: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Task 3. The Jungle would be pretty perfect for this, and The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists too if either of those happen to be on anyone's TBR.

Other than that, I'll have a scan through my TBR tomorrow to see if I have anything promising, but not holding my breath.

The only books I can think of are North and South by Gaskell and Shirley by Charlotte B or maybe The Goblet of Fire where Hermione wants to liberate the house elves. Can't say I feel a crazy desire to reread any of them. 🤭

Melindam | 8375 comments OK, I will give myself a serious push and try to finish Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race, because PoC workers rights is in a way central to the story.

Can claim it, but I won't finish it in a hurry.

Found these lists on GR, btw, in case we get this monster again. 😊

If you really don't get on with it, one of the books on those lists is on my tbr.

I had also thought that the Discworld industrial series might come in helpful.

Great idea about the Discworld, Sophie. :)

If it's a book you wouldn't mind reading, I'll happily pass this on to you (my book can be a back-up option). 🥰

Also I think I'm learning! Got 5% into a book and hated it, so actually gave up. The acknowledgement that life it too short for a rubbish book has stuck for this particular case.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Took care of Black Jack Randall and spun:

Edward Rochester (Jane Eyre)

1 200 to 299
2 MC gets gaslighted
3 MC is a teaching profession
4 fire important to plot
5 purple cover

I do have a purple lined up, but won't be until after UNO, so if anyone has anything sooner, have at it! 😁

message 1739: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments In the meantime, the book I just started fits the page count, but if anyone has anything that fits multiples, sing out and I'll see if it can fit elsewhere when I'm done 😊

Well done! I've done that a few times, but not so much since I started reading for challenges 😆

Melindam | 8375 comments I wonder if Project Hail Mary works for 3 or 4? I should start on (alongside the one with the green cover) it after I finish my current book.

3 definitely, 2 maybe, 4 I don't think so

message 1743: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments I can't remember if there were any accidental fires complicating things. If not I'm sure we can find something to fit. St. Mary's is always burning something or other down...

Melindam | 8375 comments I'm having fun with The Cocktail Parlor How Women Brought the Cocktail Home by Nicola Nice The Cocktail Parlor: How Women Brought the Cocktail Home, cocktail spotting (Corpse Reviver was just mentioned) and learning some interesting facts about domestic cocktail hostessing from the 1800s onwards. Too late for the feb/march minis, but still. 😊

message 1750: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments I worked in a cocktail bar way, way back in the mists of time.

Best part about that was the 50% staff discount on days we weren't working. Happy hour was exceedingly happy 😆
