Sure Sammy, go ahead!! 😊

message 1204: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments I lied, it's 704 😆

Have a few long ones this week, which is good timing really, lol.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Hey, I'm glad you're able to take care of those short books for us! I read all of mine during TURF, lol!

message 1207: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Sonia, your short books are much appreciated. I have so very few of those and already used them last year for previous monsters. :))

message 1208: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Short and with hot men on cover. That's something I always have handy :)

Plus I love re-reads.

is this a white cover?
The Personal Librarian by Marie Benedict

I think it is, an off-white, which is still white, right?

ETA: and if it is right, then it can probably also work for "relationship under false pretences" - Belle is in an employment relationship based on a false pretence that she is white, not Black

message 1213: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I am fine with it being white :)

message 1214: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Question: Wikipedia treats "a lady" aka author of Sense and Sensibility as "pen name". Could it get away as pseudonym or is it too much of a stretch?

message 1215: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10123 comments Mod
ooooh...... I dunno. I'd be totes fine with any of the Brontes' works being used, but I think this is anonymous publication rather than pseudonymous publication.

Melindam | 8375 comments Just found that Masters of the Air: America's Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany was published under a pseudonym, so that's OK. :)

message 1218: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Awesome! I do have books coming up I could read for the psuedonym, but probably not for a week or two, so I'm glad someone found one 😁

I'm also good with the white cover

message 1219: by Sammy (last edited Feb 16, 2024 04:04AM) (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments how are we tackling the catchy opening line?

I just finished Divergent, which has as an opening line

"There is one mirror in my house."

It's certainly an evocative opening line, bringing to mind all kinds of questions, but is it catchy? What the heck is a catchy opening line? Something melodious with a kind of rhythm to it? I haven't a clue, lol.

message 1220: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10123 comments Mod
that's catchy to me! it's our call, after all :)

Melindam | 8375 comments Question, as grammar has never been my strong point:

does "the Queen" as in Queen E II count as a "proper noun" ?

I have this book

The Other Side of the Coin: The Queen, the Dresser and the Wardrobe

and I was wondering of it would work or not?

message 1223: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10123 comments Mod
In that instance, I think yes ?

message 1224: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Or I could put my Bletchley Park book into that slot??

message 1225: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments I think the first one is more a common noun, Bletchley park definitely works though

message 1226: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Then Bletchley Park it is... and in case you have a LEEDS title, the slot is empty.... ;)

message 1227: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10123 comments Mod
we can put my Incredible Unlikeliness in there :)

message 1228: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I started my Pride and Prejudice reread yesterday and then I did some calculation and realised that this year marks the 35th anniversary of my discovering Jane Austen and reading P&P for the first time.

Apart from this making me feel very old, I had a lovely bout of nostalgia about it all. 😊🥰

message 1229: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Teehee! I had a similar moment last week when I was watching The Fellowship of the Ring with my youngest, and realised that I have been watching these dvds every year around my birthday since he was born. 21 years now!

And the first time I read the book was exactly 38 years ago!! 🥴

WOW!!

I will start watching the LOTR werkfilms today - at home with a sore throat and feeling miserable. That should be nice therapy.
Anyways, did my LOTR calculation and it's been 32 years since my first read. :)))

It's nice when you can enjoy the nostalgia of these things! Unfortunately HP has not held that status for me.

I can't believe the LOTR films are that old. Surely not... That would be the time I first read the books because you have to read the book before you watch the film and I already knew that in my teens.

After all the difficulty finding soul-suck for dementors, it's come up repeatedly in Soulless. Will have to remember the series if we get dementors again.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Fellowship came out in 2001. It was in the cinema at the same time as Monsters Inc. I know this because hubby took our toddler daughter to go see it while I was next door watching Hobbits 😁

Monsters inc is still a great film, but I think you got the better half of that deal.

I'm going to suggest that I'm banned from spinning for a bit...

Minotaur
651+
MC gets lost
map in book
"character described as ""bull-headed"" or ""hard-headed"""
Goodreads rating 4.0+

message 1237: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Unless Sammy has sth coming, I can move my Masters of the Air to the 650+ slot. Found a short book that could be used for "pseudonym".

message 1238: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments Nothing this week. Might have another long one towards the end of the month, but have a few 3-400 pagers coming up first.

It was Kayleigh's favourite film for years. When her brother was born a year or so later, we got her the VHS from him as a thank you for being my big sister pressie.

It worked, she's adored her little brother ever since 😆

(but yes, I still prefer LotR, and these days, so do my kids, lol)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments I've grabbed tasks 3 & 5 with Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War. somewhat miffed that there's no hard-headedness in the book. There should be! lol.

Will wait and see if anyone gets lost in one of my black text on cover books. Both are short unfortunately.

I miss walking into bookshops and picking books largely based on how fat the spine was. Would be a useful start for this type of task.

message 1243: by Sammy (last edited Feb 20, 2024 11:43AM) (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13023 comments I did quite a bit of that a few years ago. It would seem though that I've bought most of the really fat ones already 😆

I found hard-headed in my current book. Which might actually be the incentive to get it read and done. I started reading it on 7 Feb! Really not taken to it, but I want it out of my TBR closet!

message 1245: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Humbert Humbert is slayed!!!

Say hello to Wilson Fiske (Daredevil)

350 to 450
Author last or first name starts with a letter in WILSON
MC is rich
white clothing on cover
"daredevil" in text

message 1246: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Daredevil in text... yeah... I'm going to self ban from spinning. LOL

In some better news, I needed a book with "fun time" in the shower/bath/water for my slippery bonus this week, and remembered
Take (Temptation, #2) by Ella Frank

Which means I can knock off white clothing on cover plus MC is rich. Logan may not be Christian Grey filthy rich, but he's a rich ass layer.

at this rate none of us will be able to spin!

Meh.
