Spoilers: It isn’t revealed until the end of the book that the reason they don’t talk is due to one friend not defending the other when her dad (possible stepdad??) does something to her, which ruins there friendship. I specifically remember the book talking about how many steps away their meeting spot is and how it is near a tree I think??? But yes lots of mentions of a specific number of steps.
