My oldest friend - met her at primary school. Her brother, a year older and a former boyfriend later, was in my class. We are still friends and I am godmother to her daughter and honorary aunt to all the family. We will have know each other for almost 70 years.

I get it - thought I'd let you know.

By the way it is now the 24th of the month and I have yet to buy any book any where! This must be a first in a long time.

Just back from 3 (very hot) days in Strasbourg. After the half-timbered houses of Shrewsbury, here are some maisons à colombages:

description

As far as reading goes, Will She Do?: Act One of a Life on Stage, in which Eileen Atkins writes about her childhood and the, not very easy, start of her career as an actress. I enjoyed it.

AB76 | 6967 comments I am in the midst of reading about two Galicias, its not really a coincidence as i love both of them, have travelled there and love the history.

Spanish Galicia, the rugged, cool North Western province of emigration and the sea is the first Galicia. Manuel Rivas, a Galician language writer is conducting me through an autofiction of sorts in The Low Voices about his family and growing up in the port city of La Coruna

Austrian Galicia, the multiethnic kingdom of the Austro-Hungary empire now dvided between Poland and Ukraine is the second Galicia. Jozef Wittlin, polish author, is re-creating the world of the borderlands in 1914 as war is declared in Salt Of the Earth Poles, Jews, Ukranians all swept together into the Emperors military as the Russian threat is realised for people only miles from that country

scarletnoir | 4411 comments Are you a dissident?”, a journalist asked Milan Kundera, when he had became exiled in France from his native Czechoslovakia in the mid-1970s. “No, I am a writer,” replied the author of The Unbearable Lightness of Being. Not that he was indifferent to the plight of those who were opposing the Czech regime from inside, but he was wary of a political label being attached to a novel, and more generally to literature with a message, to art in the service of a political idea.

A fascinating article:

That is not to say that I don't have books waiting in a basket. (How's that for a bunch of negatives!) Luckily Better World Books has a 'back to school' 25% off deal on which runs 'til the 5th of September, so expect me to break the 'no book' barrier between 1 and 5 September. I did check and a couple of books are no longer available, but there are still 9 sitting there waiting.

ah but i dont think the basket counts, unless £,$ or Euros have been spent....

i think we all share the curiosity of booklovers which means periods without purchases are very rare indeed. I havent had a good oxfam shop this summer yet, a long fallow period, considering the standard of second-hand £1 paperbacks i have discovered has been very high till this summer

MK (emmakaye) | 1795 comments I have just signed up for news from Columbia University Press. I have done so in hopes that there will be a sale in the future, one where I can buy - The Curious Human Knee which is on the pricey side - $30 - for me.

Here's a quote from early on in the book - "The knee is flexible because it is (in italics) fundamentally unstable. It is, essentially, a few pieces of rigid, ill-fitting bones bound up by rope-like tissues."

At the moment I am trying to figure out which of the rope-like tissues is giving me grief.

By the way, the authur, Han Yu may be written the book after a skiing accident with subsequent surgery which may have not been, in hindsight, the best course of action.

thanks GP!
in my local area half timbering is common, many villages have quite a few houses, cottages with this style. my own house has half timbering on the inside, though outside it has render applied before i moved in. The Uk is prettyy good for half timbering but Rouen, Honfluer and areas of Alsace are probably more impressive
