At least I’m fairly certain Titanic is based off of the actual event 😉"

Yes, the Wikipedia list is. I believe "Titanic" was an original screenplay. However, it does give you ideas.

Alicia | 1490 comments But isn’t the prompt about a book turned movie that one an Oscar. Not any Oscar film? Now I’m confused.

I wouldn’t count an original screenplay as a book that was the basis of a movie.

I have read No Country for Old Men! McCarthy in general can read a lot easier if you have a visual to fall back on, I think - all of the books of his I've read, watching the movie of it has helped me contextualize what was happening in the novels. He's also got such great visuals and dialogue, it translates very well into screen, imho.

1. Sailor Moon I don't read comics /Manga and know nothing about this.
2. Going For Gold. Very much a possible.
3. Barbie . I was never into Barbie dolls and it holds no interest for me
4. Travel. I have a few books about this ,so upvote for me
5.Independant Bookseller Didn't see anything for me.
6. Zodiac This turns up a lot
7. Part of a series I read a lot of series so like this
8. Academy Award I had read a few of these but those remaining are not really exciting me
9. Smallest country I have a few from Iceland so this suits me
10. First Line Difficult to know if really interested without reading a book first
11, Civil/Human Rights Having recently been burgled and still feeling bitter I'm not feeling this is the time for this
12. Related to technology Not sure about this
13. Past Challenge Very wide choice on this
14. Related to reading. Not sure
15. A science or science fiction book My prompt as I want to read a specific book so upvote.

Now to go and ponder again.

The best thing is that you don’t need to know about the manga. Just read the interpretations listed and that basically covers the themes and concepts of the manga in digestible form.

It wouldn't be. I think we have confused each other. The prompt is

~~a book that was the basis for an Academy Award (Oscar) winning movie

The Wikipedia link is all Oscar winning movies for all awards, not just ones from books. I included it to give people a reference.

Thanks for posting this. I found it fascinating. I knew lots of these countries were small, but was surprised at how small some countries I don't think of as small are.

This is a definite upvote for me. Love the prompt.

message 65: by Edie (last edited Aug 13, 2023 08:40AM) (new)

Edie | 1147 comments Ended up with 6 upvotes and 2 downvotes (Barbie and Zodiac). Upvotes included Sailor Moon which would push me to learn more about this genre, 100 smallest countries, series, title related to reading (so many good books with library in the title), science or science fiction (not my normal read), civil/human rights. Passed on great first line but would be happy to have that get in (accompanied by a listopia )

message 66: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments I had 5 upvotes and 3 downvotes. I downvoted the small country prompt. I always have a problem with location prompts. The tropical one is giving me a hard time this year. My other downvote was the Barbie prompt only because I don't like vocational prompts either. But I'll find something if it gets in. I also downvoted technology.

I had upvoted going for the gold, science fiction, Academy Award, independent bookseller and a book that is part of a series.

I definitely wouldn't mind if the zodiac got in because I'm a Gemini and I have twin book that I can read. I liked the books for a great first line so that would be fun too. I almost downvoted the ATY prompt because I thought that would be too many choices so it's basically a free spot. Travel would be easy for me because I have more Bill Bryson books I want to read. Sailor Moon would be fine. I also have some books for the reading prompt too.

I liked the prompts a lot this time around.

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3845 comments This may be a first but I upvoted 8 prompts! Sailor Moon is one of them, after I realized several books I've read recently fit some of the examples.
A book with a Japanese author or set in Japan - How Do You Live?
A book with a talking cat - Monday Starts on Saturday
A character who is a magical girl - All the Birds in the Sky
A female soldier - Victory City
I would actually like to read some Manga. I always look at the books in B&N but have no idea what to try!

As the person who suggest his prompt (not that it matters), I think bookshop.org would count. If you have a Libro.FM subscription, you can go there as well. They are tied to Indie's and show recommendations from the bookstore you selected to support on your home page.

message 71: by Alicia (new)

Alicia | 1490 comments I've been really sitting on these, and I have 7 I really don't want to see on the list, but then I do really like some of the others:

- Going for Gold: I like books about athletes and like the broader interpretation but still connected to Olympics next year
- Sailor Moon: although I do see how now people can think it's too broad, but I'd probably also try to read manga or a book set in Japan
- Reading Title: It's like a hidden book about books prompt, which I love

I also wouldn't mind independent bookseller, because I would read off of Tookie's list from The Sentence

at this point it's just whether my enjoyment of those prompts outweighs my dread of the others.

Dubhease | 1187 comments Possible upvotes:

A book related to Going for the Gold - something Olympic related and so many possibilities

A book featuring a person who works in one the jobs that Barbie has had - this could be any book

A book that is part of a series - Useful for series readers

A book with a great first line - this could be a lot of books

Possible downvotes

A book related to Sailor Moon - my kids love anime an manga and I am over it.
.
A book involving travel, of any sort, fiction or non-fiction

A book recommended by an independent bookseller - I detest prompts that make you hunt for something to read.

A book recommended for (from provided or found list) or related to your zodiac sign. - I normally hate everything assigned to my sign.

A book that was the basis for an Academy Award (Oscar) winning movie

A book that takes place in one of the world's 100 smallest countries - small by land area or population? Why isn't there a list provided?

A science or science fiction book - I detest science fiction

If it’s listed as original screenplay by Oscar it must be written for the screen. They are very strict Whiplash was deemed adapted because of the short film the guy made to raise funds so yes Original Screenplay is no use for finding books that became Oscar winners

I have no experience with Sailor Moon, and although yes, I could certainly find something from the list of suggested themes (and will, if it gets voted in), it wouldn't be fun for me because I could just as easily have chosen a book based on that themes list without any mention of Sailor Moon. If I'm going to do a pop culture prompt, I want it to be something I'm familiar enough with to be able to figure out for myself which themes would make sense. I wasn't interested in the "Friends" prompt either, for the same reason -- never saw it, zero interest in it. I vote for prompts that have some meaning for me personally rather than ones that mean I'll just be choosing from a Listopia or a list of themes. Just throwing out my point of view; of course I understand that we all choose which prompts we prefer for a wide range of reasons.

My issue with the Sailor Moon prompt is in trying to explain it, so many ideas have been brought in that it has become a read anything prompt.

(When I think of the Spice Girls my frame of reference is Mel B as an AGT judge.) Even though I’m not familiar w Sailor Moon, I like that it’s a book series and a genre I don’t read but have an interest in. It just feels like a really fun prompt. I think you nailed it, though, with the reasoning why some pop culture related prompts fall flat.

I guess my point is that explaining it isn't going to change anything for someone like me who hasn't seen it and has no interest in it. Explained or not, it's still going to be more or less a read-anything prompt because I have no point of reference to make it more personal for myself.

The Colonel: The Extraordinary Story of Colonel Tom Parker and Elvis Presley

Blonde
Mrs. 'Arris Goes to Paris - film "Mrs Harris Goes to Paris"
The Death of Ivan Ilych - film "Living"

Shawshank Redemption = Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption (novella) published in the book Different Seasons by Stephen King
Million Dollar Baby = ROPE BURNS: Stories from the Corner
Slumdog Millionaire = Q & A. There are now other books linked to Slumdog Millionaire, but this is the original book.
The Sting = The Big Con: The Story of the Confidence Man
Sound of Music = The Story of the Trapp Family Singers
Ford v Ferrari = Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari, and Their Battle for Speed and Glory at Le Mans

I agree with 3/4 of the examples you mentioned - I have watched and get a kick out of Eurovision, but this was the first year it was shown in the US so many Americans (and probably many other non-Europeans) won't be familiar with it. (One difference about that prompt, though, is that it was about the countries, not the event.) I think pop culture prompts might be more popular if they were broad enough that group members all over the world would have some familiarity with them. One example might be the Beatles? Possibly Shakespeare, since there are adaptations of his work written and performed in many cultures? Harry Potter? Something more general like boy bands? Animation? Reality TV (I find it repulsive, but it does seem to be everywhere in some form)? I'm thinking aloud here... The Barbie prompt might be a good example of this; Barbies are sold in 150 countries worldwide. It's hard to imagine anyone completely unfamiliar with them.

Siobhan J | 12 comments 4 up and 4 down again. I feel quite excited about my upvotes this week, though!

Upvotes:

1. A book related to Sailor Moon - I LOVED Sailor Moon as a kid, so am fairly excited about this one. I’m not sure what I’d read for it yet, but there are a lot of fun options!

3. A book featuring a person who works in one the jobs that Barbie has had - This made me smile, so I just had to upvote it. I mean, she’s worked hundreds of jobs at this point. A nice “adjust your own difficulty” prompt!

7. A book that is part of a series - I read primarily romance and crime, so I have a lot of series I’d love an excuse to read.

11. A book related to "civil rights" or "human rights" - My attention is definitely caught by this one. If I fancy an easy time with it I can pick up an LGBTQ romance, if I fancy a bit more of a challenge I can read a non-fiction book. A lot of options that could lead to some really interesting reads!

Downvotes:

5. A book recommended by an independent bookseller
6. A book recommended for (from provided or found list) or related to your zodiac sign.
8. A book that was the basis for an Academy Award (Oscar) winning movie
9. A book that takes place in one of the world's 100 smallest countries

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments No one has to vote for things they don't know or like but can we please stop saying things aren't globally known just because they're not in your personal realm of knowledge.

I have never watched or read Sailor Moon but I know who she is (I'm British) and a quick look at Wikipedia shows how much of an international success it has been.

By the series's 20th anniversary in 2012, the manga had sold over 35 million copies in over fifty countries, and the franchise has generated $13 billion in worldwide merchandise sales as of 2014. The English adaptations of both the manga and the anime series became the first successful shōjo title in the United States. In Diamond Comic Distributors's May 1999 "Graphic Novel and Trade Paperback" category, Sailor Moon Volume 3 was the best-selling comic book in the United States.

Sailor Moon was broadcast in Spain and France beginning in December 1993; these became the first countries outside Japan to broadcast the series. It was later aired in Russia, South Korea, the Philippines, China, Italy, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia and Hong Kong, before North America picked up the franchise for adaptation. In the Philippines, Sailor Moon was one of its carrier network's main draws, helping it to become the third-biggest network in the country.
