I read this about 8 years ago (around 2016), and i specifically remember the edges of the pages being coloured, for example, the edges were all red for one book, all yellow for another etc.

When did it take place? do you remember anything about the cover or the author?

Do you mean it had colored edges on the cover, or on the pages themselves? This doesn't have color on the edge of the cover, but the plot made me think if it.
