Sci-Fi. Ending of the world. I remember a man and woman as main characters, I remember them going underground and a room filled with DNA of animals and seeds to restart the world, and a golem army. Read around 2007. Spoiler.

I read this book about 16 years ago. As stated in the title, it was the world coming to an end...a man and woman as the main characters...they went underground to a huge abandoned city as part of trying to save it...I remember a golem army trying to stop them.

At some point they are in a room or walkway filled with all types of seeds and DNA to restart the world with.

SPOILER: I seem to recall the man sacrificing himself, or trying to sacrifice himself...but I can't recall if he actually dies or not.

What is bringing about the end of the world - or only humanity?

Can you describe the golem army and who controls it? Is the term "golem" used?

I believe at least one was a scientist of some sort.

All of humanity is still alive, they were trying to prevent it. I can't remember if the whole world or humanity was ending.

No one controlled the golem army. It was just there to prevent the main characters from succeeding.

I do remember that the golem army was thought to be statues in the abandoned underground city. As the people got closer to the area they needed to be in, the golems "woke up" and started to chase them.
