Colleen | 3 comments Pretty sure the book is from the 90s, but could be as early as 1988.

Character names (I am about 80% certain about all of them except “Kate”):
TV Exec: Katherine “Kate” Marchand
TV Exec’s Husband: Jonathan, a doctor
Anchorwoman: Kim
Anchorwoman’s Son: Jason “Jase”?

General Info:
Kate is a former star reporter and current TV exec who is in the process of acquiring enough control to start her on media empire. She is replacing the anchor, and hires Kim, a young widow for the job. Kim’s son Jason is about 7-ish.

Kate’s husband has cheated on her and they are trying to repair their marriage.

Kate’s husband bears a strong resemblance to Kim’s late husband.

Kim meets a co-worker of Jonathan’s – another doctor – and they start dating.

Kate has shrapnel in her back from covering a story in a war zone and swims daily to keep her pain at bay and her back limber.

Kate jokes with her secretary that the secretary “likes to select the talent”.

Kate is in a meeting and feels like she is losing control, so at a pivotal moment, she gets up from the table to get herself a cup of coffee, pulling everyone’s attention and regaining control.

Kate had a miscarriage when her husband cheated, and spent time in a beach house recovering. She takes Kim to that same beach house during a difficult time.

Kim is covering a big story when she is kidnapped. Wherever she is kept is near the water. During proof-of-life calls, Kim provides clues to her location and that she is going to attempt to escape via the water. I think Kate, who is a strong swimmer, ultimately swims out to help her as part of the rescue.
