SOLVED. YA or Middle-Grade Fantasy novel about a boy wrongfully accused of murder so he is enchanted by a witch to turn into a girl from his village so he can solve the murder. [s]

I read this book about 15 years ago from the local library so about 2008. I remember the boy was either killed for a murder he did not commit or locked in a cave? But, a witch or warlock or someone comes to visit him disguised as an old woman I believe and they chat and he ends up being enchanted to be disguised as a girl from the village who was away visiting her aunt. He goes back to live with the girl's parents who are extremely surprised she came back. He then attempts to find the real killer. I think at one point he is even briefly turned into a bird or maybe the witch is a bird??? I hate that I cannot remember much more. I don't even fully remember what the book looked like. I just loved the story so much and want to try and find it so I can read it again.
