A book that did highly influenced me in childhood (30 years ago...). What I remember:
1. Character is an alcohol dependent dock worker (England maybe) some memories say around Industrial Revolution.
2. Well built, extremely strong,
3. Often into fights. One specific moment: in one of the fights he defended/attacked by throwing himself under the legs of opponents.
4. He started writing novels that became super popular,
5. He was almost starving and no eating when writting,

Solved. Martin Eden by Jack London.
However I could not find when he tossed himself under the legs of opponents, maybe I confused with other novel (or the language, I think I read in Polish).
But the plot in general fits my memories.
