This story opens with four scientists celebrating being awarded a grant to fund their study on the behavior of wolves. We follow their story through alternating chapters with the main story. Share your early thoughts on how the scientists’ story played into the main plotline? Were you confused about the relevance early on?

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1203 comments What might have surprised me was the narrow focus of the study, which was awarded a very nice grant. The scientists did seem a bit odd (and I've been one, married to one, parent to one, and grandmother to one chemist!)

Robin (robinmy) | 2450 comments Since I read the backblurb of the book, I knew a body was found in Alaska. Since these scientists were based in Alaska, I assumed one or more of them were behind the death.

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2973 comments Ditto Robin. Without the book blurb and knowing that somehow Alaska ties into the main story I would have not known how it was all going to tie up.

I agree with Charlene that the scientists were a strange bunch.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3484 comments I guess I am the outlier here. The scientists weren't so weird as focused to me. I worked at Johns Hopkins for MDs and PhDs who loved their research for years. These scientists reminded me of some I know. I wrote many broad and narrow grant requests depending on what NIH or other agencies wanted.

I didn't read the blurb because I'm so far behind, but it didn't take long before I suspected at least one of the scientists was a murderer.
