It's now time to get ready to vote for our next set of prompts! The thread will be open for at least 24 hours before the poll gets posted. This is a good opportunity to ask any question you may have regarding the prompts, do some research, or ask for recommendations.

Voting will open in the morning of Thursday, July 20 and results will be posted in the morning of Monday, July 24 (CST time).

How it works:
- When the voting opens, follow the link to the mini-poll that will be added at the end of this post
- You have a total of 8 votes this poll to spread across your favorite and least favorite prompts (you can also use less than 8 votes)
- You can find examples of acceptable voting practices on the Introduction thread.
- The prompts with the more favorable votes (comparing top votes to bottom votes, and looking at the overall number of votes it received) will be added to the final list

We are asking people to include their Goodreads profile address when they vote. To find this, just go to your own profile and then copy the URL/web address. If for some reason you can't link to your Goodreads profile, please post your full Goodreads name with enough identifiable information that we'll be able to access your profile.

Possible Prompts:
1. 3 Weeks: Three books related to the lines in a Roses Are Red poem
2. 3 Weeks: Three books whose titles create a sentence or short poem
3. 2 Weeks: A work of fiction and nonfiction that are related
4. 2 Weeks: Two books with similar covers
5. 3 Weeks: One book for each of the three forms of water - solid, liquid, gas
6. 2 Weeks: A book with "life" in the title, and a book with "death" in the title
7. 2 Weeks: Two books that are part of a series
8. 3 Weeks: Three books from a series
9. 2 Weeks: A book involving Lost family and a book involving Found family
10. 2 Weeks: Two books related to "truth or dare"
11. 3 Weeks: Three books related to music (Specifically: A book with a musical instrument on the cover, A book with a music genre in the title, and A book with a music theme)
12. 4 Weeks: Four books where each cover is related to a different season (fall, winter, spring, summer)
13. 2 Weeks: Two books by authors with names the rhyme
14. 3 Weeks: Three books where each one is related to land, sea, or air
15. 2 Weeks: A classic and its retelling

Feel free to discuss the prompts below, but please remember to be respectful to the other group members.

As a reminder, we will be limiting the amount of weeks that will make it to the top of the Multiweek Poll to 6 weeks maximum. You will have the normal amount of votes to cast, but only the top 2-3 will get in based on how many weeks they are.

THOUGHTS AND IDEAS FROM THE SUGGESTIONS THREAD

1. 3 Weeks: Three books related to the lines in a Roses Are Red poem
Roses are red
Violets are blue,
Sugar is sweet
And so are you.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roses_A...

eg. a red book, a blue book and a sweet book, but you could use the final line instead of sweet or make up your own second half for a freebie. Here's a list of some silly versions

Related to something else that rhymes with Blue

2. 3 Weeks: Three books whose titles create a sentence or short poem
"This is based on and idea from the book Spine Poems: An Eclectic Collection of Found Verse for Book Lovers
and a game played by ATY52 in 2022: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

E.g. (these are all from my GR TBR):

1)
The Heat Will Kill You First
Now Is Not the Time to Panic
John Dies at the End

2)
Out of Darkness, Shining Light
This Child Will Be Great
Evidence of Things Unseen

3)
Binocular Vision
Forever The Country of the Blind

4)
Maggie & Me,
The Woman Next Door —
Never Meant to Meet You

5)
Saturday Night at the Lakeside Supper Club
At the Wolf's Table
Delicious!

And thanks to Brittany, these short poems from titles:

1)
When We're Thirty
The Three of Us
Murder Your Employer

2)
This is Where I Leave You
Spare Black Cake

3)
Fiona and Jane
Trust My Sister, the Serial Killer

3. 2 Weeks: A work of fiction and nonfiction that are related
It could be the same person, event, place, time period, etc.

4. 2 Weeks: Two books with similar covers
Please see this comment for examples: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

5. 3 Weeks: One book for each of the three forms of water - solid, liquid, gas
examples: books with ice or snow on the cover, books with water in the title, genres such as steampunk

7. 2 Weeks: Two books that are part of a series
These two books do not *have* to be from the same series

9. 2 Weeks: A book involving Lost family and a book involving Found family
Lost and Found families.
Read a book involving a Lost family, and
Read a book involving a Found family.

Read a book involving a lost family
This might involve a lost or missing person, a child separated from its parents or siblings, or a family separated due to death, divorce, estrangement, relocation, work, illness, a lie, kidnapping, war, disaster, immigration, or other reason. Some books might involve both a lost and found element in the plot.

Read a book involving a found family
This could be a biological or non-biological family. A family reunited after a separation, a missing person found or returned, a foster or adopted family, or a relative found with the help of a network or genetic testing. “Found family” often refers to a close group of friends who substitute for a biological family. (E.g. after being rejected by, or running away from a family). Some books might involve both lost and found elements in the plot

13. 2 Weeks: Two books by authors with names the rhyme
Examples
Oh, Bowe, Shapiro, Picoult, Mailhot, Vo, Chou, DiCamillo, Antonio
Deanna Raybourn and Joanna Bourne
Katharine McGee and Kazu Kibuishi
Jennifer McQuiston and Viet Thanh Nguyen
Charlotte McConaghy and Paul Tremblay
Katie Mack and Holly Black
Virginia Woolf and Gene Wolfe and Tom Wolfe

14. 3 Weeks: Three books where each one is related to land, sea, or air
The prompts would be written: A book related to land, A book related to sea, and A book related to air

I apologize in advance... I saw that three weeks of a series was suggested, but I wanted only two weeks. My intention was to remove the one that didn't get seconded, but then they were both seconded back to back. I'm hoping that the votes don't cancel each other out, but rather people vote for one or the other or both.

If both were voted top would we end up with 5 weeks of series books? Or would you just go with the one that got most votes?

message 5: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments I think the three states of water is creative! Steam (gas) probably needs more ideas as I can imagine a lot of people being resistant to steampunk. Something involving steam trains? A spa? I might finally get round to reading Raising Steam if it got in.

Could also be clouds, or mist. Like Cloud Atlas, or The Mists of Avalon?
Or steamy romance novels lol

Some place that is humid could work for Steam in my opinion.

Or a book involving someone in the cooking world doing canning, or cooking lobster, or making steamed mussels.

A new mom boiling baby bottles (is that even done any more? Or do all baby bottles now have those liner bags? My youngest will be 28 this year, so I haven't kep track).

A steamy romance? (edit: great minds think alike Isabel!)

I'm of the "vote for the ones you want" strategy, so I'll probably be upvoting... three? and downvoting the rest. Even if they add up to more than 6 weeks.

I’ll be voting for the ones I like the most. You never know what will make it in. But if I like two equally, I’ll go with the shorter one. I don’t read many series books, so I would prefer the 2 week version of the prompt. I agree with Ellie that only one of those should make it in.

I love books related to music, but 3 of them could be overkill. If it doesn’t get it, I’d like to see a regular prompt related to music.

How about you Pamela?

I was on earlier today and the suggestions hadn't started, now I missed them! As always, I have opinions.

I am rather tired of retellings, especially if I have to go back and read the original also. I am more open to a more general interpretation. Many romances are overall a retelling of Cinderella, Romeo and Juliet, Beauty and the Beast, etc. just because they have a theme of marrying the prince/millionaire, star-crossed love, or an isolated/wounded hero. Also I enjoy new Sherlock Holmes stories, I suppose they could be considered a retelling.

My gut feeling is that not everyone understands "truth or dare" - maybe a predominantly American game? Same with Found Family, I'm not sure everyone understands what that means.

Names that rhyme is also tricky, the original suggestion includied names that are the same or sound the same, like Wolf, Wolff, Wolfe. I wouldn't call that a rhyme myself, maybe a KIS option. We don't always know how names are pronounced, for instance, does Chou rhyme with Poe or with Carew?

For me, 2 or 3 weeks of a series is too easy but 3 books related to music is too hard. (Yes there are books with instruments in the title, books where the character is a musician, etc. but they're not always easy to find.)

message 14: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments All of Seanan McGuire's Wayward Children books make lovely lines in book spine poems.

The 2024 addition to the series is called Mislaid in Parts Half-Known.

message 15: by Kendra (new)

Kendra | 2088 comments Here's how I think I'm going to vote...

Down
🔹4 seasons
I downvote 4 week prompts on principle.
🔹3 books that make a poem
This is a prompt for the people who's favorite part of the challenge is the planning. I hate planning and mostly read and match to challenge after the fact. Also, we already have a lot of title based prompts.
🔹3 books related to music
It's the specific ways they have to be related that makes this prompt a no for me.

Up
🔹2 similar covers
I seconded this one, and it's the only one I'm really hoping makes it in.
🔹2 books from a series
I prefer 2 week prompts to 3 week prompt.
🔹Nonfiction/Fiction
I upvote any nonfiction prompt
🔹2 authors who's names rhyme

Under Debate
🔹Classic/Retelling
This was my sister's nomination, but I'm not super excited by it.
🔹3 series books
As I said, I prefer the 2 week version, but I want one of them to make it on and I'm worried they'll split the vote.

So do I vote to support my sister, or do I try to vote strategically? Or do I downvote one of the other prompts to increase the chances of the similar covers prompt?

I’m not sure about Chou, but Picoult definitely rhymes with Oh and Pekoe.

I would love more examples of the fiction - nonfiction pairs. My book club read Remarkably Bright Creatures, and The Soul of an Octopus. They were great together.

message 19: by Alicia (new)

Samantha | 1570 comments Great set of ideas!

I need to ponder my votes a bit but think three books whose titles create a sentence or short poem, two books with similar covers and two books related to "truth or dare" are all upvotes

I will probably downvote both series prompts and a classic and its retelling. I don't read a lot of series and there are only a few classics left I have any interest in and to match that with retelling makes it harder.

Elizabeth (elizabeth1234561) | 223 comments I realllllly like the idea 3 but I wish it wasn't nonfiction/fiction. I mean all week I've accidentally been reading books related to each other so I do love the idea of this but won't vote for it because I really seldom read nonfiction. I suggested the 3 weeks for a series prompt, and in the Wild Discussion I'd discussed either 2 or 3 week prompts for the series. 3 weeks seemed more popular as then it could give the option for a trilogy.

Yes I really love that one too!! I'm an engineer and my previous job involved a lot of two-phase flow, so it's close to my heart :-)

The vapor phase could be steam, fog, mist, clouds, humidity, wisps ... so you could read

* steampunk, or books set in the Victorian age when steam power was in its ascendency,

* books about mists ( The Garden of Evening Mists, The Mist, Flame in the Mist, A Court of Mist and Fury, Beyond the Highland Mist),

* books about clouds and weather (Too Like the Lightning, The Gift of Rain - although rain would be a better fit for "liquid" I guess), Weather Girl)

* books set in humid places (Mostly Dead Things, Swamplandia!)

* books set in swamps or with fairies (Will o' the Wisp)

Liquid of course can be rain, or rivers or oceans, or drinks ...

Solid could be ice, snow, glaciers (Welcome to the Goddamn Ice Cube: Chasing Fear and Finding Home in the Great White North, Ice Planet Barbarians, The Ice Princess)

I bet there are even more possible directions to go in on this one - I love how simple it is and how creative it can be, and I just love the physics of the magical change of state!!! My kids are SO SICK of me talking to them about water's state changes when we are making iced tea or whatever.

I think I'll just start with my normal 4 up, 4 down and adjust as needs be,

I like the music prompt a bunch but 3 is too much. If it doesn't make it, I hope it comes back as a single week prompt.

For those who "never" read nonfiction, there are some wonderful books that read like fiction, including biographies, memoirs and historical subjects. Some examples

Seabiscuit: An American Legend
The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics
The Glass Castle

If you like animals there is All Creatures Great and Small, Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World, and many books about dogs.

There are true crime and survival stories for those who like thrillers.

And for just about any hobby or interest you have, there are books about them.

I'm happy to help people brainstorm some ideas around nonfiction, I love reading it. Some can be dry, but these days most are pretty good at having a narrative.

message 38: by Alicia (new)

Alicia | 1490 comments I actually love multi-week week. I make it my own BIO option each year and add one of my favorite prompts that didn’t make it to narrow it down. Because of that I like some that are a bit broader in how they can be interpreted, but still new and creative.

As for strategy, I treat it the same as any other week.

I’m worried solid, liquid, gas will conflict with land, sea, air. But maybe it’s just me. When I saw solid, liquid, gas I immediately thought earth for solid and air for gas. So a bit torn on which to vote for.

I'd recommend that you vote for what you like and let the mods deal with the 6-week max cut off. We'll figure it out; I'd rather you voted for the prompts you liked the most.

message 40: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1837 comments I have 3 definite downvotes which is high for me, I almost never downvote more than 2. For this round I'm only upvoting the ones I really want and downvoting the ones I would prefer not to do, where I normally just stay neutral on those unless I really don't like it. I also have 3 definite upvotes so the other 2 are still TBD.

I'm not sure what to do about books in a series, I want that to get in and while I'd prefer 2 I'm okay with 3. Do I upvote both? Only upvote 2 and hope either one gets in? I'm assuming I should not upvote one and downvote the other, as that would cancel each other out.

Good point, anyone can design a personal challenge where you take 2, 3, or 4 of the regular weekly prompts and make them match one or more of the multi-week challenges like books with similar covers, titles forming a poem, etc.

I think PopSugar did a book set in your favourite season and they had a listopia for each. (Warning the books split between literalists eg. people who would put "Dash and Lily's Book of Dares" which takes place in December since winter only starts December 21, from people who would put all Christmas books in winter because of snow, shopping, hot chocolate) And these are Northern hemisphere - if you live in the Southern hemisphere, these suggestions won't all work.

Thanks for this. Yep I'm Southern so would have Christmas books in summer (althought not if they have snow on them :P).

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3266 comments I'm never a fan of multiweek prompts generally, and unfortunately there is only one that I very strongly want this time around (lost and found family). I theoretically like the idea of multiweeks but often find very generic, open-ended ones get in and take up 5 or 6 weeks that I'd much rather see going to unique prompts instead.

Even though I like reading series and have a series goal every year, I would be a little annoyed if both the 2 and 3 week version of the series prompt made it. If we have to have multiweeks at all, I'd rather they at least be different from each other.

I have a few I'm thinking of downvoting because they've been done before (classic and retelling, fiction and nonfiction pair), and a few because I already know my options are limited. This may be the only poll ever, at least that I can remember, only up voting 1.

Probably both series won’t get in. If they did, the Mods might decide to choose the one with the most votes. Kind of like the winner of the drawing from the Summer Challenge gets to pick a prompt, but it can’t be too similar to one that’s already voted in.

I think it would be fair to just have one series prompt win, since Emily's original intention was to reduce it from 3 books to 2 books anyway. So if both win, the opposite would happen from Emily's intention. I like reading series, but 5 books for a prompt is too much.

Maybe the mods could tweak this somehow in case both prompts have high votes? Or maybe even add another voting option aside from the upvotes and downvotes regarding this issue.

Yeah my concern is half the people voting for series vote for 3 weeks, half 2 weeks and then not enough for either to win, whereas if there was just 1 then most of the people who voted for one of the other would have probably voted for it...so to me it feels more likely that neither would would win, rather than both winning.
