Not sure if it’s what you are looking for, but when I read this I immediately thought of Sheri S Tepper’s True Game series, especially the first trilogy, King’s Blood Four, Necromancer Nine and Wizard’s Eleven.
Thank you, that's it. I came across the title "King's Blood Four" while searching for these. I read them many years ago and I thought I would never find them again.

In this world, everyone has one of about 12 powers or talents - create fire, shapeshift, etc. The protagonist has access to all of those powers from his bag of carved figures, one for each power, but he does not know his own identify, power, or origin. He quests to find himself. I think this is a short series of books.
