a story of two sisters who run away after discovering their parents dead. they go to their relatives who live on a farm. they hitchhike their their way there, stop at a mcdonalds to eat. the big sister tries to make the little sister laugh by saying, i can see your knick knacks. the book had a name like going home

Aha - I think it could be Running Home by Teresa Doran. There's a copy on archive.org and I found this quote:

Running Home also mentions McDonald's, while Homecoming didn't mention knick knacks. Sounds like the one!
