J | 41 comments Things I remember:
She lives on a farm or country home.
The boy is nasty, they run away because he made a bad fire. She gets scared and he convinces her it's her fault too.
They hitch a ride on a train. He cuts off her long pigtail then abandons her.
She is helped by two nice but poor girls, one who is a hairdresser and fixes her hair and buys her new clothes.
Some how she winds up in a home run by a negligent and slightly abusive women who wears her hair in a beehive. She draws on a beauty mark.
There was a boy there - might have even been the same one, also nasty, he has a knife.
I believe there is a little bit in there about MLKJ.
She finds her way back home eventually.
I think the cover might be pinkish or yellow...the book title reminds me of the secret life of bees but that might just be because of the hairdo.
Read about seven years ago.

J | 41 comments the main character is a girl - she had a sweet name, maybe a flower or a plant or something more whimsical

Rainbowheart | 28693 comments Does anything on the Runaways in YA and Middle Grade Fiction list look familiar?

Rainbowheart | 28693 comments Is the main character a teenager or a younger child?

Did it seem like a newish book at the time you read it?

J | 41 comments The girl I remember to be around twelve.
And I won't say it was new but it was definitely a modern book. Although set in the 1950's it was probably written in the 2010's.

Rainbowheart | 28693 comments This sounds super familiar to me!

Do you remember if the girl disguised herself as a boy? Is that why the boy cut off her hair?

Allie Quillian | 6 comments I've definitely read this book. I'll have to go through my shelf and look to see if I can find it!

J | 41 comments No, she wasn't disguised as a boy. He cut it off as a cruel joke.

Allie Quillian | 6 comments Some of it reminds me of Saving Ceecee Honeycutt but only bits and pieces. I wish I could see the history of the books I checked out at the library.

Rainbowheart | 28693 comments Saving CeeCee Honeycutt for Allie's link.

J | 41 comments Hmm this doesn't seem to be it. But will look into it a bit more.
Another thing - I may be thinking of another book but I think the girl's name may have been Caroline or Catherine or something of the sort, and the boy may have been Jack.
